Overview
More
The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge is an Art Gallery, Library and Visitor Information Centre situated in the heart of historic Canterbury. This award winning facility provides state-of-the-art exhibition galleries, excellent educational facilities and a varied programme of events for all ages. The building takes its name from its benefactor, Dr James George Beaney, a Canterbury-born man of modest background who studied medicine before emigrating to Australia, where he found his success. Upon his death in 1891, Dr Beaney left money in his will to the city of Canterbury to build an ‘Institute for Working Men’ with amenities for men from poor backgrounds such as his own. His patronage was fundamental in building the Beaney Institute: a new home for the Canterbury Royal Museum and Free Library, now known as The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge. A cultural hub in East Kent, praised for its welcoming atmosphere, providing a range of services under one roof, uniting art, heritage, books, ideas, information and collections. Whether you are a frequent Library user, a teacher on a Schools Workshop, a parent enjoying the perfect cup of coffee in our Cafe or an inquisitive explorer studying our treasures from the Ancient worlds; The Beaney is a building for everyone.

Some stunning photographs in the Special Exhibition area - free of charge, donations only - (£5 plus in London). Sadly neither well lit or well presented Other features available - we were only there for the 1 reason!

There is no charge as it is probably the tourist information locale but it has a room that exhibits local artists. It has a snack bar/cafeteria. It has a library. The free wifi didn't work. Confused as to the purpose of this place.

Worth hunting for the originals of Bagpuss, Clangers, Noggin the Nog. Also some Rupert Bear memorabilia.

Well worth a visit. I was surprised how much I liked Cooper's paintings of cattle on the ground floor. There is just a wide range of different stuff to see spread over two floors. We spent longer than I expected despite not stopping to study...More

The Beaney's quaint exterior has a surprise inside - a beautifully updated exhibition space. The museum's curators have a knack for selecting and arranging wonderful small exhibits from their wildly diverse range of subjects - the roots of this museum appear to be the older...More

Went in to see the TaylorWessing photographic exhibition.Very well laid out and thought provoking On the permanent displays, they were well laid out and accessible but they could do with removing the taxidermy - who needs to see a stuffed badger these days?

While this may not have the most impressive art collection ever, the fact that they are organized by theme rather than just chronologically makes it interesting and gives a sort of wonder cabinet feel to the place.

The Beaney has a wide variety of static exhibits all year round, but this is complimented by rotating specials every few months. Currently they have some of the original puppets from Bagpuss, The Clangers, and Noggin the Nog, from local Peter Firmin.

The museum had different exhibitions, Drawn to the light: A hidden cathedral, Taylor Wessing Photographing Portrait Prize 2016 and Kent Printmakers: A selling show. They were all worth seeing. Look for more reviews by MulleEllum.
