Interesting to visit, even if its not raining

Thoughtful temporary exhibitions complement the permanent displays including a small, excellent collection of Kurt Schwitters' work from his time in Cumbria which is worth the visit in itself; I always make a point of looking at them again to understand his overlooked contribution to art. Great little gift and bookshop shop and staff and volunteers. Sanctuary away from the bustle... More

Having visited Kendal quite a few times I was really surprised to discover this excellent venue. The building itself is a delight,,elegant and quite grand. The art collection however is just a joy. It is varied and well presented , a good mix of traditional and modern work. Many of the artists I had not had the privilege to see... More

We bought a joint ticket to visit the Art gallery when we visited the adjacent Museum of Lakeland Life. Unfortunately, we arrived just before a new exhibition was being curated, so some of the rooms were closed – for which we received a reduction on the admission price. Because of that, I’ve decided to rate the gallery as “average”, although... More

That's what I felt. Some very nice Romney's but not too much else. The exhibit on the 1st floor left us flat. Price is too high for what was there.

This has to be one the best small galleries in the U.K Currently there is an extensive exhibition of Winifred Nicholson's art which is well worth a visit but there is also a permanent collection of first class art : Piper, Kaufman , Romney and a small but informative room of Kurt Schwitters .

We visited this Art Gallery as an-add-on to the Museum of Lakeland Life, and it proved to be well worth the time and money. The portraits painted by George Romney are magnificent and the old photographs by Joseph Hardman are fascinating. We only got to visit Abbot's Hall because it was raining, but felt that it would have been a... More

Lovely looking building , visited on the late august bank holiday , it was quiet but maybe this was because it really nice outdoors . Would be a great place to spend an hour or two at if the weather is bad. Does not seem too welcoming to kids so best visited on your own . The quality of some... More

Abbot Hall has an art collection to rival any in the country, including some wonderful pieces by the celebrated 18th Century portrait painter, George Romney, who lived in Kendal at the end of his life. Adjacent, is the charming "Museum of Lakeland Life", with an eclectic mix of Cumbrian history and artefacts. The buildings were badly affected by the Kendal... More

We wanted to see the Lowry paintings but there were 5 of us and it would been too expensive . Ended up walking the grounds and taking photos instead of going in. Shame because it is a lovely looking building.

This is a very civilised way of spending an hour or two enjoying a range of artistic styles. Whether you like eighteenth century portraiture ( its star artist is local boy George Romney, once as highly regarded as Gainsborough and Reynolds who have held onto their esteem more than Romney has managed to do, perhaps unfairly as some of the...
