If you are a NT member you can park up for free and easily visit the lakeside rather than pay extortionate amount to park in the towns. Great views.

We visited Great Wood for a walk as we were short of time. The circular walk is described in some detail from the National Trust car park but it charges £4 for 2 hours; £5.50 for 4 hours; and £6.50 all day - which is rather expensive mid-week in January when there are relatively few visitors. We instead joined the... More

Moderate difficulty, best starting from Keswick at SpringsRoad so getting fantastic views across Derwentwater from quite a high point. The wood itself is then walked downhill. Relatively few people, sometimes see deer. End up in NT car park but can turn left to Sour Milk Ghyll then up a difficult gradient to Walla Crag or along an easy path to... More

We love Great wood, on a nice day. There is parking, but get there early, as on a good day it fills up fast. This has a big field with a gentle stream at the bottom, the kids will play for hours making dams and floating things, just make sure you remember a towel and a change of clothes for... More

We approached the wood from Ambleside road via Spring road. Pleasant walk through woods next to a river along a reasonable path which rises gradually. Lots of options when you get further up including a tour of the stone circle, the great wood itself or if you are feeling really fit then go for the ascent of Walla Crag. The... More

I came to the Lake District for the first time when I was a child with my parents and we drove through the woods and I distinctly remember seeing the sun on the lake through the trees and all the tiny shadows of leaves on the road. I always said I wanted to come back when I was older so... More

We loved the peace and quiet in this wood. A great place to walk up to Walla Crag or to Ashness Bridge. Two years ago we saw a red squirrel, last year a roe deer, this year we saw and heard treecreepers. The autumn colours looked stunning. Good views over Derwentwater.
