A place of inspiration. The gardens at Lowther castle have lain abandoned...

A place of inspiration. The gardens at Lowther castle have lain abandoned for 70 years, and the original plantings have long since disappeared leaving the the architectural outlines of 17th Century and Edwardian gardens intact despite WWII weapons testing in the gardens, since overplanted with trees and covered by moss and lichen. The castle ruins are a constant reminder of the powerful presence of this place and its role in history. A major restoration project started 4 years ago and has uncovered a stunning selection of garden remains and vistas - the Pate d'Oie, Rock Gardens, Pinetum, 17th C. yew avenue, stunning views from the escarpment, and so much more. Atmospheric and enchanting, these gardens encourage reflection on the stunning past of this unique place. A small restoration exhibition shows details of the work already undertaken on the castle ruin and courtyard areas as well as 'stunning before and after' images. Tree trail, rope swings for all ages, and wild play areas for children. We are a charity. Admittance fees help us to continue the on-going works.Opening hours 10.00am to 5.00pm everyday; adults £8, children under 16 free, well behaved dogs very welcome. Why not visit the Courtyard Cafe for light lunches, soups, sandwiches and a wonderful selection of cakes and bakes. Luxury Picnics (please order in advance) or make up your own from our 'take - away' selection. We also have a gift and plant shop in the stable block. Lowther Castle and gardens are just magical and magnificent. The history attached to this historic building is a treat to know and very interesting . If you can afford it buy the book in the shop entitled ' The Yellow Earl ' who owned the castle during the end of the Victorian era and beginning of the 20th century .A... More

Obviously living in Thailand means we don't get to visit Lowther very often so changes are perhaps more noticeable. Whatever time of year, there always something of interest to see and the exercise of walking around the grounds can only be beneficial! The views of the surrounding countryside are magnificent with the trees in winter forming wonderful silhouettes. It's definitely... More

Took my partner for the day, walked from penrith which was about a 5/6 mile walk. I did think we would see more inside, but after seeing how much is actually left of the castle and not derelict I understood why. Cafe great and reasonable, gardens and walks fantastic, amazing play areas for children. Spent about 3-4hrs, had we not... More

We saw this in the distance and decided to explore. Throughly enjoyed our day out here. Thought it was reasonably priced. Great glimpse into the castles history. We had a lovely time exploring the grounds and Castle and it is great to see whiles being restored and doesn't reek of corporate fun attraction like so many others. Just a simple... More

The grounds are beautiful to drive through. No matter which road you take through the grounds, the scenery is stunning. Obviously the castle has to be visited. The restoration work is ongoing, and impressive. There are gardens to visit (I haven't been through yet), and the coffee shop is very good, and well laid out. Traveling through the estate, there... What a fantastic place albeit a little expensive. 😐 Lots to do and a wooden castle ideal for children and adults to play on. 😁

This site is still developing. When finished completely it will be a great day out for all the family. The rock garden is lovely and walking through the Lowther Estate offers great views over the fells. The play fort for children is the best I've ever seen. I feel at the moment the £8 entry fee is a tad high.... More

Lovely informal gardens. Great play area and rope swings, suitable for all ages. Great views and very photogenic. Would be good value in summer when you could take a picnic and spend the full day there, some great picnic tables. Thought £30 for a family in Winter was quite a lot, no discount for OAPS or a family group. Dog... More

Ended up at a loose end and decided to have a look around Lowther castle and gardens. Certainly not disappointed - interesting display about the history of the castle and it's owners, the castle itself is a ruin but is still magnificent, and the gardens were huge and pleasant to stroll around. It was very quiet probably as it was... More
