Since 1663 the Theatre Royal Drury Lane has provided entertainment for the masses and has been visited by every monarch since the Restoration. The theatre has not one, but two, royal boxes and it was here that the public first heard both the National Anthem and Rule Britannia. Previous buildings were managed by the great actor David Garrick and the famous playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan and he current, fourth, building was opened in 1812.The theatre was renowned for its spectacular Victorian melodramas and pantomimes but since the 1920s its history has mirrored the development of the modern musical. From the original London productions of American musicals Rose Marie, The Desert Song and Show Boat, through Ivor Novello’s romantic operettas and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s groundbreaking post-war shows to The Producers and The Lord of the Rings. My Fair Lady held the record as the theatres longest run for many years but Cameron Mackintosh’s record breaking production of Miss Saigon, at ten years, is the current record holder.

Very good value for money however be prepared for a long time on the coach. This was not helped by the M3 closure the weekend we travelled. A stunning stage version of the musical well performed a treat to watch. The sets were fantastic and the cast were brilliant even on a wet Wednesday afternoon. I would recommend this show to anybody but especially to those who remember the old Hollywood musicals. When the huge mirror appeared to show the cast on stage from above it was... More

Wow this show was amazing!! The stage and costumes were so colourful and the dancing was superb. Even though the underlying story wasn't the greatest, it didn't even matter as everything else was just so amazing. Best musical I've seen in a very long time!!! Could've used some more leg room in my seat, luckily the seat beside me was... More

I'll be honest, my partner booked tickets for this and because I'm not familiar with the story, or songs, I really wasn't looking forward to it. But what can I say, one of the best shows I've seen! Right the way through from the opening dance up until the final curtain dropped I sat there with a huge smile on... More

My sister and I came to this theatre with my mum to watch 42nd street for her birthday. The theatre itself is lovely. Remember to look up at the ceilings in the building and the pillars - all very lovely. Toilets are what you expect in an old building such as this. Get there early to avoid queues for them!... More

What can I say , just incredible the energy of the dancers. The whole presentation was sumptuous, glittering, wonderful numerous costume changes. The tap dancing is sensational. The singing is good too by Sheena Easton and Clare Halse. Clare gives a superlative performance. A big star performance. Just great.
