At Saltholme, you'll find a world of amazing wildlife thriving right in the middle of the Tees Valley's heavy industry.Surprising, isn't it? But this is a brilliant place for wildlife – and for you! Come and explore the state- of-the-art visitor centre with panoramic views of the reserve and its industrial backdrop. Follow your nose to the café to sample freshly brewed coffee and home-cooked meals, and then stop off in the shop for a bit of retail therapy.Get outdoors with the family to explore the discovery zone and run, jump and clamber through the adventure playground. If you fancy relaxing, seek out a bench in the tranquil wildlife garden or venture to the far reaches of the reserve for some quiet time with nature. However you want to spend your time at Saltholme, you're sure to fall in love with the place and come back time and time again.

About once a month I drive up from London to visit my father and we always go to Saltholme to watch birds and other wildlife. Despite being in the middle of an industrial area there is plenty of birds to watch. Usually in the winter we'll see species like Marsh Harriers, lapwings and curlews. In the summer there are dragonflies... More

A quick lunch break from work with friends again. We have visited here for "birthday lunches" for a number of years with not one issue. You pay per car, not per visitor, so fill it up with passengers. A great little cafe upstairs with hot fresh food every time. The staff are lovely. If you go you have to try... More

Saltholme is a lovely day out with the kids, the staff were great and very helpful and the cafe is very reasonably priced. I loved it as much as the kids, there is loads for them to do and keep them interested.

RSPB Saltholme is a great day out. The staff and volunteers are so welcoming and help you with identify the birds. The bird hides offer good views on the lakes and there are charts and lists of the various birds that can be seen. It is particularly interesting when the migrating visitors, sand martins and terns come to breed here.... More

We are experienced birdwatchers and often visit the Hartlepool area. There are many places, which turn up rare birds, and Saltholme is amongst them. The visitor centre is well organised, staff are welcoming, and the shop is well stocked. We were pleased to see that volunteers were beside the winter roost site for Long-eared Owl, so as to ensure the... More

Nice peaceful place, good play area for the kids, activities indoors, nice cafe, helpful staff, nice toilets. We went when it was a bit muddy so we only walked the shortest route around the lake which the kids enjoyed. We will be going back. If you don't like birds or animals, this is not for you.

we visited Saltholme yesterday and enjoyed a walk round the site and a chat with some guides in the hides. It is an interesting site with lots of accessible hides and information booklets with illustrations of birds to spot. The staff are welcoming and friendly. We then went to the café for lunch. I had a delicious bowl of piping... More

There are many sign posted walks both long and short, easy to push prams around, with lots of birds to see. There is a children's play park and activities are available for small fee, members free. Also a cafe on site.
