Really enjoyed the rail tour that came through on Saturday. Great watching the steam engines on the mainline. Especially with Whitby in the background.

One of northern England's scenic railways, the Middlesbrough-Whitby run counts among the best ways to see the relatively remote and inaccessible Esk Valley. We joined the train at Marton, in Middlesbrough's southern suburbs, where parking is free. Our 76-minute ride to the coast started to become interesting beyond Nunthorpe, with views of Roseberry Topping and Cook Monument-topped Easby Moor. A... More

The line from Middlesborough to Whitby goes down this lovely green rural river valley. As the Esk meanders, the railway itself crosses and criss crosses the river several times. The views from the train window are very English and very picturesque. I suspect autumn golden leaf colours will look great but the green of late summer was fine too. As... More

if you go to whitby, try going upto middlesborough on a service train through beautiful countryside, its only a 2 coach local service, but well worth it , we carried on from middleborough to saltburn by the sea, as we were staying near, at skelton in cleveland its a long trip all the way ( 3 hours ), you can... To reach Whitby one choice is to get on the train at Middlesbrough. The faded industrial grandeur is soon left behind and Rosebery Topping comes into view. The train reverses at Battersby and the scenery becomes far more interesting, the train slows regular and stops every five minutes at tiny halts and refreshed stations ideal for walks. Following the valley,... More

Lovely views of the Moors, the various villages, the river Esk as it makes its way to Whitby and plenty of wildlife to spot out the window. Makes the journey part of the holiday.

We got the Esk Valley Railway from Middlesborough to Whitby and enjoyed the scenic views over different parts of the Moors. A wonderful way to see the landscape. During our break, we took the train back to a couple of stations to complete circular walks (walking routes found on the North Yorkshire Moors website) - very handy but make sure... More

Probably more for train lovers than a true touristy thing (that's the North Yorks Moors railway) but get your timings sorted and enjoy a trundle up and down the Esk Valley.

Staying in Whitby we decided to take the train to Danby to visit the Moors Centre which is well worth a visit. This journey is one of the most scenic railway journeys in the country following the river Esk along the valley. The line criss crosses the river many times. This a good journey for nature lovers, pheasants, herons, hawks,... More
