Nice museum, but the highlight was the insight we got into British/Viking history by volunteer Paul Stein. He used over an hour to explain many interesting facts about viking era Yorkshire. Even let us touch & closely inspect some of the exhibits. Better than many guided tours and completely free.

Had been looking forward to visiting here- considering Yorkshires great history, it was all a bit jumbled. I was hoping to see rooms full of discoveries and enthused staff full of historical knowledge... However the ruins and the gardens are great It's a nice place to visit for a while, but I wouldn't put it top of your list.

The museum has incorporated the ruins of St. Mary's Abbey in its basement without moving the stones, so you can see them authentically. We also enjoyed the basement timelines to help us understand the times of the Vikings, the Normans, the Tudor kings, and some of the Georgian influence. There were lots more artifacts to be seen than we had... More

I was slightly disappointed with my visit here: The collections were significantly smaller than I had expected and focused only on particular aspects of Yorkshire's history. There's almost nothing from the modern period here. But the artifacts on display are well presented and accompanied by extensive interpretation. This is certainly not a must-see for the visitor to York, but if... More

The museum gardens where this is based are lovely, so myself and my mum thought it would be a good idea to visit the museum to find out more about York's history. It was more about animals that are now extinct and some history about the Tudors, the Romans and the Vikings. It was a lot smaller than I expected... More

Lovely open planned museum with interactive education for children. I expected more about York and Yorkshire itself than was actually there. Set in lovely gardens.

Split into 3 main periods - Roman, Viking and War of the Roses. Found it confusing on what route to take through the museum if you wanted to go round in a date order. Needed better signage.

The collection is small, and most of what is displayed is from the area. Spend some time and pay attention to the placards. Some of the pieces are very significant. There a number of important displays containing helmets, coins, jewels, bowls Roman and Viking hoards. Not that much interesting.

The Yorkshire Museum is set in beautiful gardens in the heart of the historic city of York. It displays some of the finest Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Viking and medieval artefacts that you can ever hope to see – all discovered in Britain. The museum covers three floors and there is a lift. We found it very interesting and informative; the staff... More
