The Merchant Adventurers’ Hall is one of York’s medieval marvels. Set in beautiful gardens in the heart of historical York, it is open for public use as a museum, wedding and hospitality venue and meeting place some 650 years after construction began in 1357. This stunning timber framed building was constructed by a fraternity made up of York citizens to provide a base for charity, worship and business. Today, as well as being a fascinating accredited museum it is also a scheduled ancient monument and Grade 1 listed building. The Hall is home to many remarkable collections. Including silver, furniture and paintings, which provide a glimpse into the rich history of the Hall and the people associated with it. The Hall also remains the everyday base for the Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York. They invite you to discover the secrets of this unique guild hall and its 650 years of history.

We hadn't planned to visit this hall, but were so glad that we did. We were walking into city centre, when we saw this beautiful old hall, that oozes history. The day we went, it was very quiet, so we were able to soak up the atmosphere. There is written information available, but only in English I think. There are... More

Worth the entry fee, and well worth visiting. This lovely old building is full of 'history', and there's much to learn about its hundreds of years.

The building is a step back in time to visit the ancient world of trade, adventure and discovery. The wood framed building is an engineering and architectural marvel - you can spend ages just admiring the craftsmanship. The furniture is worth looking at and the chapel is a delight - internally and externally. I found the developing artistic styles of... More

This beautiful old building is slap in the middle of York. Entering it is like stepping back in time. The lovely old staircase leads to the upper rooms and great hall, but don't worry if stairs are a problem because there is a lift. Well worth a visit.

We had visited York for the specific reason of attending the Vintage Fair held at the Merchants hall.It was easy to find with plenty of parking nearby. Inside the building was beautiful a bit too dark in the large room downstairs so seeing the beautiful on things on sale wasn't too good. (more lighting next time please!) Upstairs was much... More

Have tried several times to get in. This time lucky, but inside preparations underway for some reception or other. Fel like we were encroaching. It is a fine hall, but there is no information available. Pleasant location in the park, and by the river.

Hello William. Thank you for your review on your visit to the Hall. I am sorry that you didn't enjoy your visit to the Hall. We are a museum and a venue for hire so on occasions we do have to set-up the Hall for events whilst we are open to visitors. We do advise visitors of this on their... More

A magnificent building and a testament to the way York takes care of its heritage. This hall represents York at its height in the 14th and 15th century before it fell away in importance.

Incredible history and well worth a visit. Still being used as a wedding/reception venue, but well worth a look.

Set back from the road with a garden for good weather days. The price includes a commentary machine which gives enough info without being boring. Gobsmacking timber work and a very ancient building with lots of information boards..

The Merchants hall is a still used . The hall is in the heart of York and costs 6 pounds for an adult to visit. The entry fee includes an audio guide which explains the rooms of the hall.
