No visit to York is complete without a stroll along part of the 2 miles of historic walls that have protected the city for nearly 2000 years. The walls are completely free to walk, however bespoke guided tours can be booked with your own personal tour guide, meeting you at a time and place to suit you, and showing you the extensive hidden history to be found along the walls.

I’m not sure how exactly one rates city walls. I found myself strolling atop them courtesy of York’s free walking tour on a beautiful Summer day. The York city walls are very well maintained and the walkway along them is easy to navigate, with a...More

You get the best view of the city and the most beautiful view of the Minster from the city walls. A must in York!

Puts the city in perspective and helps to orientate you, parts of the city become visible from height that you might miss otherwise

Well worth spending time to have a wander around the parts of the walls that are accessible around York, also allows for ease pub locating, well worth a bit of exercise.

Fascinating walk around the city with good views of some lovely gardens on the way. You need to do it in several stages as it does not go around the city in one sweep so there are stairs to climb each time. The walls are...More

We never got the feeling like we could fall. There are high walls or fences and solid footing. If it's just being high, I think 20-30 feet at the most is it.
