York Theatre Royal has been producing great drama in the beautiful city of York for over 250 years and is one of the country's leading producing theatres. Each year the theatre entertains over 200,000 people with its wide variety of performances, events and activities including the much loved annual pantomime starring Berwick Kaler, the UK's longest-running Dame. Over the last ten years York Theatre Royal's work has expanded to include collaborations with the wider community and school groups both on and off stage. The theatre has seen an increase in the number of young people wanting to get involved and as a result they now have one of the largest youth theatre groups in the country with over 300 members. In recent years, the theatre has had huge success in terms of number of attendees and various awards recognising their work for The Railway Children hosted at the National Railway Museum and then transferred to the old Eurostar terminal at Waterloo, and the large scale production of the York Mystery Plays 2012 involving over 1,000 members of the community. The theatre reopened Friday 22 April following a £6million redevelopment, with a new roof, an extended and re-modelled front of house area, a refurbished and redecorated main auditorium and with major improvements to access and environmental impact. York Theatre Royal is now a building fit for a 21st century audience that will be sustainable and able to thrive into the future.

I have seen 4 previous productions of this moving show and this was the best. Layton Williams who plays Angel is brilliant. The part is always played by a talented actor however the dynamic energy he brings to the role with the subtly of his interactions with the other cast is outstanding. Well worth seeing. The theatre is tight but... More

Such a skilled troupe - all could sing, dance and play at lest one musical instrument. They brought out all the humour, and turned on the pathos of this classic tale of loves and lives lost though timidity. "Roxanne" with a broad, smiley and almost naive Scots accent was absolutely superb. "Cyrno" himelf was as magnificent as his nose!

Thought it might be interesting to see a Sandi Toksvig play - Silver Lining. Some reasonably amusing moments, but have to say, on this evidence, that Sandi should probably not give up her day job. Though good performances by the actors.

Hi I booked online with York Theatre Royal- tickets arrived for John Cooper Studio Theatre- 41 Monkgate. A small theatre in a ? Church Hall -but perfect for the show- 'Goodnight Mister Tom'. With only a couple dozen seats in the theatre- the space was well utilised & the audience became part of the show. A wonderful experience. The show... More

Took mum here for a belated Mother's Day treat to see Silver linings. Lovely clean facilities and friendly staff, not overly warm (as with a lot of theatres) and thoroughly enjoyed the performance (silver linings, bizarre but funny!) Will be looking out for future shows here, great location! We made it to the train in less than 7 minutes after... More

Although this was not performed in the theatre itself ,but in the Castle Museum, I need to record my thanks to the young people involved. We had a great time, felt very involved into the story of York during WW1. What a great idea to perform in Kirkgate. There were some stars in the making and I hope some remain... More

We visited on Saturday for the first time since the refurbishment. Was impressed with the work, nice atmosphere and lovely cafe area. We asked about dietary requirements as need dairy free but sadly nothing was suitable. It wouldn't be very difficult to have one option dairy free or just vegan to cover all aspects! Please consider it. They did have... More

This was the first time visiting this theatre and were pleasantly surprised by how helpful all the staff were especially regarding the treatment of the disabled. Very commendable. Good seating and reduced ticket prices combined with a particularly good play made this a delightful experience.

We went to the café/bar here because it was open in the evening and is well spoken of as a café . Unfortunately the refurbished design is so bad that we missed meeting each other promptly since it is so hard to see the other tables from any of the 3-ish eating areas ! When we finally sat down at... More
