78 Derngate is the only house in England designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

It is now a multi award-winning visitor attraction offering an unforgettable day out in Northampton.

Designed and remodelled by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1916, the house has been meticulously restored and opened to the public. On site: a boutique restaurant, light-filled art galleries, a stylish design shop and elegant spaces that can be hired for meetings, events and functions.

78 Derngate was the architect's final major commission; his visionary patron, Northampton model engineer, W.J Bassett-Lowke. It is the only place in the world where Mackintosh's mature architectural and interior style can be seen in their original setting. As such, the house has drawn many thousands of visitors from around the globe. Now you can follow in their footsteps and see this unique work from one of Britain's most influential and celebrated designers.

This is a must if you love Art Deco as I do, it's English Heritage so if if you are a member it's free to get in. It's Reni Mackingtosh as his best, it's the house he designed here in Northampton.

The history of this house is very interesting, even living in the area I did not know the true meaning or background apart from the connection to the internal decoration.

Most of my knowledge of Mackintosh is from posters and jewellery inspired by his work. These are often beautiful and delicate but are obviously only a part of his story. 78 Derngate has such an interesting story alongside a fabulous design. I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the house and seeing the different influences on it. Thank you so much to all... More

Wonderful selection of savories and sweets as well as the tea and coffee choices, You definately need a strategy when the sweet tray arrives, but a great meal, will be returning.

What a stroke of luck! Saw a leaflet and booked a free tour which was with two other older guys who also knew the name Bassett Lowke - of model railways and ships fame. But it was the Charles Rennie MacKintosh interiors we had come to see - an all round exquisite highly photographic experience. Worth a second visit (free... More

I am so pleased I spotted this on Trip Advisor. We were in the area and I just checked to see if there was anything unmissable and spotted this. Wow! I love the place. It is well worth doing the tour because you find out so much more when the guide explains things. It's a superb house that is really... More

Really interesting place to visit - fascinating history and the food in the cafe was wonderful too. Since I enjoyed the cafe so much, I returned a week later with my family

I loved the tour of the CRM designed house, the only one outside Scotland (in the UK). The tour lasts approx one hour and fifteen minutes and our guide was extremely knowledgeable. Anyone who is interested in design will similarly enjoy the experience. CRM was an innovative designer and some of the fine detail just has to be seen. The... More

I visited with my parents a few weeks ago and they both really enjoyed the tour, as did I. The guide was well informed and could answer any questions asked. Afterwards, we went into the cafe within the building. I was particularly impressed by the availability of (two!) vegan options- they were delicious cakes too. Would recommend.
