Visit Roman Vindolanda today and you will find one of the North East’s most famous and not to be missed tourist attractions lying in the beautiful landscape of Hadrian's Wall Country. Formerly a key military post on the northern frontier of Britain, Vindolanda is the home of Britain's 'Top Treasure' - the Vindolanda Writing Tablets - and is one Europe's most important Roman archeological sites, with live excavations taking place every year. The recently fully refurbished on site museum provides a breathtaking exploration of the Trust's ongoing discoveries and accounts of Roman life. There are no other places on earth where it is possible to experience Roman Britain, Hadrian's Wall and history coming to life before your very eyes all in one space! Come and explore it for yourself and find out why Vindolanda is treasured worldwide.

A very interesting attraction, the value of the finds at Vindolanda should not be underestimated. Possibly not the most attractive venue on a cold, wet and blustery December day, but still enjoyable. Recommend combining with the Roman Military Museum and a lunch stop at the...More

First I’ll just start with the downside.. we were confused if this was actually Hadrian’s Wall or a replica. Looks like other reviewers were as well. It seems it’s a site near Hadrian’s Wall. Nonetheless, it was done beautifully! There are some breathtaking views, a...More

The entrance was basic and didn’t fill us with hope but it just got better and better. The Romans chose a perfect spot with gorgeous views and an attractive, fast flowing river. Seeing the ruins and the layers of history and being able to walk...More

Even under the snow the place is impressive. The museum is very well made and the high point of the visit are the famous “tablets” discovered and the transcription made. Large collection of coins, loop videos, narrations.... they got it all!

Visited on a late December afternoon and wish we had longer as loads to see. Unfortunately we were kicked out at 4PM despite what iit says here and the website (5PM). Also alarmingly the paths around the fort excavations were so icy that it was...More

This two centre attraction provides a great opportunity to see what the lives of the Roman occupants must have been like in this barren landscape. We would recommend visiting the Museum first; particularly as The Edge of Empire film gave a good overview. In conjunction...More

On a snowy day in early December we wondered whether a visit to Vindolanda would be fun... it was. The site is totally absorbing - walking on the paving stones of the streets of the village and Roman fort, a drainage channel trickling beside us;...More

I have never been more fascinated by a museum visit. It was like getting to know the neighbours - so vivid were the displays and explanations of the finds. The shoes are just awesome and the coins look so fresh you could spend them! We...More

Great day out and absolutely fascinating. Good museums with plenty to see. Worth buying the guide book so you find out more detail than the placards outside of the ruins.
