More
Lying in magnificent countryside next to a sweeping section of Hadrian's Wall and based at the site of Carvoran Roman Fort, the Roman Army Museum is an authentic and dramatic tribute to Rome’s extraordinary military legacy. Step into the life of a Roman soldier and experience life on the front line of Emperor Hadrian’s formidable British frontier. Explored through reconstructions, objects excavated along Hadrian's Wall and the Vindolanda Trust’s inspiring interpretations of army life including the exclusive 3D Edge of Empire film, the museum pays unforgettable homage to Rome's military accomplishments in Britain.

We spent a week in Hexham and visited several places around Hadrian's wall. The Roman army Museum is an excellent place to visit if the weather is bad with several artefacts which were revealed from archiology at Vinlandia. You can get a combination discount tickets...More

We were looking for Hadrian's Wall and came across this interesting retrospective of the Roman Army in England. Terrific interpretive signage, great computer generated stories and fun hands-on exercises.

We really enjoyed a short visit here. The film (20 mins) gave the overview - literally - about the Wall, and so much more. It really helped us appreciate the visit to Vindolanda and all the other parts of the Wall. The cafe was great....More

Although the musuem 'section' is not a patch on the sister site, Vindalonda, there are very informative timelines explaining what happened during this period of the Roman Empire. The 3D film is a definite must to see - very well done. Buy the joint ticket...More

Called in to this museum on a whim after seeing Hadrian's Wall. This museum really does explain, show and tell who, how and why in the Roman army. I am a bit of a history geek and I learned a lot - and widened my...More

I'm a lover of Roman History. This is one of the nicest, best put together museums I have been to. Great exhibits, film, displays and staff. A real gem and very informative and exciting for Roman buffs and others.

At first we thought the museum was a bit small but the exhibits are really informative and the 3D film is excellent. It really sets you up to visit the other forts. Join it up with Vindolanda and you won't be disappointed. Both have good...More

This is a very well presented museum and very interesting. Only a short stroll off the Wall and will help in understanding the background to Roman times. Also a cafe to refresh yourself. Congratulations to the Trust and staff.

Very good presentation of Roman history. The film is very good and the story of the Vindolanda Tablets is great. Combine with a visit to Vindolanda on one ticket.

A superb, spacious & well laid out museum located very close to Hadrian’s Wall at Walltown Crags, Northumberland, which incidentally is one of the highest sections of the wall. Upon admission to the museum collect 3D glasses for later use in the 3D cinema where,...More

Currently the museum does not have a roman costume area, however we are looking into this as an option during the Hadrians Cavalry exhibition this summer.
