Wandered in to Hexham Abbey but unfortunately there was a funeral about to start- so only managed a small glimpse of the building before retreating into the visitor centre which looks new- lots of interactive things to do and would be great with younger people. A few teenage boys seemed to enjoy trying on the robes. There was one volunteer... More

What a lovely tranquil place to visit, gardens are well maintained. Parking is available by obtaining a street disc for £1:00 which gives you 2 hours. Plenty coffee shops or a Wetherspoons just off the square. Plenty local stores and quirky gift shops. Dog friendly

Lots of history well displayed and portrayed in the visitor centre culminating in a visit to this beautiful abbey, fascinating. And I recommend the Refectory Café:-)

The abbey is an amazing survival from the vicissitudes of border history. Ancient and modern go hand in hand from the very early (6th century) crypt to the modern restaurant and shop. Of all the things to visit in this part of England Hexham Abbey must figure towards the top of any list

It was many years ago that I visited Hexham Abbey and am glad that I have, at last, been able to make a return visit both to view the Abbey and attend a service. The Abbey is beautifully preserved, including the late 7th century crypt and Bishop Wulfstan's throne. The guides and other staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. At... More

We have visited most northern monasteries and cathedrals, but knew almost nothing in advance about Hexham. And we were pleasantly surprised. It has a fascinating and varied history of almost 1500 years and lots of features from different periods, including the original crypt. The museum is small but with lots of interaction for children. Don't miss this if you are... More

We only visited the cafe as we had to cut our visit short unfortunately, but the food was good and service excellent and not expensive either, definitely worth a visit

We called in and were amazed at the size of the abbey, the stained glass windows and how beautiful the abbey is. Pleasantly surprised that we could go in and wander around in quiet reflection, would have expected a lot of visitors but it wasn't crowded. It's such a well looked after place and worth a visit.

Impressive stain glass, extremely old crypt. Friendly passionate welcoming staff, Modern family friendly cafe, very clean toilets. Beautifully and appropriately stocked gift shop. I'm not big on religion or history but I did find myself interested in some items on display in the Abbey not just in its shop. I'm sure that the Abbey is a big part of the... More

Thanks for your kind comments, yes we like to think we have something to offer everyone, regardless of religion. As an historical site we do have many treasures inside the Abbey and visitor centre, and we are glad you got the chance to visit the Cafe and shop. More
