Set apart from other iconic landmarks, the Castle I feel is a good place to begin a day's walk round Oxford city. If time and cash are short, you can walk round most of the castle grounds and gaze at The Mound without paying for the tour. Each building and section is clearly marked and it's history described in detail.

A great history of the castle showing its use from all parts of its history including up to recent years as a prison. Guided through by an interpretive leader to illustrate and guide the experience - after which you can go explore on your own. It is certainly a must see and the views from the mound are the best... The tour guides dress up as various characters from history. We had Rowland Jenkes. Rowland gave a very interesting tour around the venue showing information about various events throughout history

I don't think this attraction could be considered a must-see in Oxford. No doubt on its historic relevance and symbolic power. But there are a lot of more beautiful things to visit before the Castle. Anyway, the guided tour is the best way to visit it. The guide I had was defenitely a great entertainer. He is alone worth the... More

For 900 years the only way you would have got into Oxford prison was as a prisoner, for the past 10 years it has been open to tourists, business, restaurants, and markets. The castle is pre-Norman and has one of the few Saxon stone towers surviving in the UK, The 'prison experience' is one to set the blood curdling, and... More

We only visited the hilltop, so this reveiw does not cover the castle itself. Their is a hill were you pay to pass a gate. There was no view to speak of and only a couple minutes walk. Really not much.

This castle served as a prison for hundreds of years, right up till 1996! The entire tour and the bits of the castle we could see were all decked out in its prison years’ “attire.” Their ad material makes much of period-costumed guides. (My experience with costumed guides is that they can sometimes be very full of themselves and are... More

Fun and family friendly tour around Oxford Castle. Lots of interesting facts stories told by our tour guide. After the tour, you can walk around freely and explore the crypt and prison cells. Maybe a little expensive for the short tour but worth it for a nice day out.
