Can walk all the way around the remnants of the walls. The views are far reaching and very attractive. During the summer months Reading University archaeologists have been working to uncover some of the the Roman remains of Silchester. There is a lovely small amphitheater (just outside the walls) which is well worth a visit. There is a very small... More

Lots of walls and 4 "gates". We were disappointed on our first visit that there were no building remains apart from the walls and gate tower. The amphitheater, outside the walls to the north east, is worth a visit. Park at the site's car park (follow brown signs), or walk from The Calleva Arms (ex Queens Head) in Silchester village.... We had a wonderful outing to the Roman ruins. Peaceful country walk and astounding to see the remains of the Roman town. Lovely day out.

It is a lovely walk out with friends but as others have said not that much to see. Somewhere to go on a nice day

Great circular walk around the roman wall, shopping off aat the Norman church to look at the beauty of this ancient monument. Can cross the road to visit the amphitheatre and pretend to fight a lion!

Take the name of this place with a pinch of salt and bring your imagination. There is pretty much nothing left and all you can do is walk by the "walls". There is no access to "inside" grassland so to speak. There are ruins of a Roman amphitheater which is slightly more impressive but again you do need a good... More

We walked around Silchester on a beautiful sunny day but I would have liked to have had more information provided about the place.

Calleva Atrebatum was a vast Iron Age settlement built on a NW-SE/SE-NW grid plan. During the Roman period the centre of the settlement was surrounded by the mile-long wall now visible today, and an amphitheatre built just outside the walls. The walls, amphitheatre and earthworks are no all that can be seen on the surface. To see the finds from... More

Having lived in Berkshire all my life, I visited Silchester Roman City Walls for the first time last year. It is such a beautiful, peaceful and relaxing walk, with stunning views across the countryside. It is also worth visiting Silchester Church whilst there.

New years day in fact. Just the right length to clear the head and get over a late night. Easy level walk, good signs, and a smattering of rain near the end. Worth the walk but dont travel too far to get there.
