Overview
More
The spire of St Mary's is one of the tallest in England and for over 500 years it has dominated the skyline of Shrewsbury's old town. In 1739, showman Robert Cadman attempted to slide from it, head first, using a rope and a grooved breastplate. His engraved obituary stands outside the west door. The church is now the only complete Medieval church in Shrewsbury. It dates from Saxon times and has beautiful additions from the 12th-century onwards. Inside, the atmosphere is peaceful with the soaring stone arches giving way to the church's great treasure - its stained glass. There are panels in glorious colour including the world-famous 14th-century 'Jesse window' filled with figures of Old Testament kings and prophets. No other church in the country has a collection to equal it. The Café at St Mary's Church, Shrewsbury, run by the Battlefield 1403 farm shop and deli, is now open Monday - Saturday 10am - 4pm.

We popped in here to escape the sunshine and were welcomed by a gentleman who gave an excellent history lesson and tour of this historic church. Noting it's origins and the developments of the church over the centuries, not to mention the amazing Jesse window....More

This was a lovely church but it was a little strange to have a bookshop and a cafe in the church. I loved the stained glass and all the information available about the church. Absolutely lovely.

Having visited this historic building twice, once with a guide, and the second time to sing with a choir to raise funds for WaterAid on 30th June, I appreciate the stained glass windows, pillars, and spiritual atmosphere. There's even a small cafe and toilet, not...More

This church boasts stunning stained glass windows and also has a delightful cafe located in one corner. Each December Christmas cards are on sale here.

The building itself is amazing, the wooden ceiling over the nave is stunning, and the Jesse Window glorious. However, what really makes this place truly superb are the wonderful people who give up their time to make sure you enjoy your visit. From the gentleman...More

Popped in for morning coffee and enjoyed coffee and a toasted teacake. Nice to be able to support such a good cause. Good service, nice menu with lovely home made produce (raspberry jam was delicious).
