You feel like your at the end of the world. Most people nowadays are not used to being somewhere so deserted. There is however enough to look at to hold your interest although you will need to be prepared for a good walk between each attraction.

Open between April and October on certain days, and only reached by a small ferry operating at 20 minute intervals, please check for details to plan your visit to avoid disappointment. Be aware the ferry can get very busy so plan to arrive in good time. Once on the Ness, there is lots to see, plenty of birdlife to watch,... More

Went years ago with another couple. It was a mystery until we arrived at Orford and waited for the lovely little ferry to take us across to the island, I was wearing goldy loafers as we did then and my friend had red suede loafers, and loved her ciggies. The last thing she said before disembarking from the ferry was... More

We took a boat trip from Orford Quay to sail out and round the island in the River Ore Estuary, between Orford and Orford Ness, which is an RSPB reserve. There was a running commentary about the various landmarks we could see in the distance, the history of the area, the buildings and their uses, currently and in the past,... More

Standard National Trust fare this ain't. Orford Ness is a relatively small spit of land, cut off from the mainland by a narrow strip of water. And for nearly a century it was used by the military to test a variety of projectiles - from lobbing small bombs out of planes in the First World War to sophisticated Cold War-era... More

Beautiful scenery and Orford is a lovely area to visit. We enjoyed a very good fish lunch at the Jolly Sailor pub.

The Ness is a great place: loads of history, atmosphere, views and wildlife. Visitor numbers are restricted and you can only book the ferry on the day, so it is worth having a contingency plan (eg the castle) in case you can't get a seat. There are no catering facilities on the Ness and only one set of toilets, which... More

Travelling across on the little NT ferry we expected a day of bird watching on a shingle spit amongst some old army and Air Force buildings. Instead we discovered a landscape that had been totally turned over to military use in the 20th century, that was now being reclaimed by the forces of natures destructive powers. Crumbling buildings and miles... More

It is not often that the brisk east wind on this coastline is welcome but it was a hot day with clear blue skies when we visited Orford. The wildlife was not inclined to exert itself seeking shade where possible. There was an extraordinary heat haze which distorted views through the binoculars and rendered photography rather frustrating. Nonetheless we had... More
