Re-live the glorious days of the steam railway at Stephenson Railway Museum! The Museum is home to George Stephenson's 'Billy', a forerunner of the world- famous Rocket, and many other engines from the great age of steam. A programme of free events runs throughout the year, and train rides on working steam and diesel locomotives are available at certain times (check the website for details).

How could you not visit a brilliant but small museum that says so much about the extraordinary innovation of steam trains?

I visited this museum at the weekend and was very impressed; it's definitely not a large museum and it really does only appeal to railway enthusiasts or persons who can appreciate looking at old trains. That said however, it is exceptionally good value with free...More

Being lovers of all things railway related, this seemed like a good place to visit. My disappointment? It wasn't bigger. Very interesting and it's free so you can't complain but I would have loved there to have been more. For an hour or so it's...More

I only spent about 45 minutes here today, and it was good. Not amazing due to the size of the place. There is only so much they can do with the size of the site, what they have there is fun, and there been a...More

Lovely sunny afternoon helped make for a great time for all children visiting the museum and enjoying the activities on offer. Train ride was great on Percy. Thought the catering was a tad overpriced however considering tickets had been purchased. Face painting free was good...More

We are down in the area for a holiday and browsing through various websites on what's available in the area stumbled upon the Stephenson railway museum. Hubby and son are both train fanatics so I thought that this would be an ideal way to pass...More

Great way to occupy the children on a rainy day. Lots of things to interact with. Good understanding on how the train industry started.
