Take a scenic ferry trip across the River Avon to the Waterside gardens by the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and recreation grounds.

In operation since 1937, and fully rebuilt in 2010 by Avon Boating, 'Malvolio' as it is named has ferried thousands of passengers back and forth over the River Avon. As one of the last remaining hand wound chain ferries in the country you will get to see a unique angle of the river with views downriver to the Holy Trinity Church and upstream to the RST.

Peaceful Crossing of the Avon

Went across here with my granddaughter, very relaxed crossing. Bargain at 50p each. Young lady recited a sonnet as it was William Shakespeare's birthday weekend.

Worth doing just for the experience. A short cut across the river from the church (Shakespear's Grave) to the Butterfly Farm. Ice cream van on one side of the river.

The walking ferry, as it is known, costs people a mere 50 pence to use. You walk on to it and you are transported by a really lovely ferryman who winds the chain (almost like peddling a bike with his arms) across the river. It doesn't take very long but reminds you of a time gone by. This, coupled with... More

I often take the ferry when I need to go to the other side of the river such as during the boat festival. It saves my poor old legs and also helps avoid the crowds.

Had just had a long walk along the river bank and needed to get to the other side of the river, the ferry saved me a 15 minute walk either way to the bridge.

A short crossing and not essential as the walk around is not very far. But it's nice to get on the water and see the hand operated chain system that gets you across. Only 50p.
