- AmyLJSouth Wales, United Kingdom314 contributionsUnderated!Have always thought this was a stunningly beautiful building, like a mini Pantheon! Had no idea it was actually a courthouse which you can wander about and see in all it's scary glory! The museum is also a fascinating place full of gorgeous artwork and fascinating artifacts. Definitely worth a visit and do not miss the impressive and huge painting of the Lusitania sinking in the lobby of the courtroom. Very moving. Most highly recommended!Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 7 June 2024
- Ernie HCardiff, United Kingdom2,300 contributionsOld with the newThe museum is very good, old courthouse, school room downstairs. The old cells didn't seem to be open (pity). Upstairs is a good mix of artefacts through the ages, personal, railway, blacksmith etc. Surprised at how few reviews there are, as it is free, and worth visiting. Toilets are nice and clean too!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 June 2024
- Hampshirehogs21Southampton, United Kingdom119 contributionsA gem to enjoyDon't walk by this great pillared building containing art gallery, museum and library. It is all free to enter. Entry is through the pleasant garden at the rear. There is a courthouse on the ground floor which is stunning. Take a photo. Helpful lady on reception for the museum gave us an idea of what to expect and the place is a gem. So interesting with Victorian displays, a wooden boat, various artefacts and memorabilia. All beautifully displayed with information. A well spent hour+ indeed.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 June 2024

The museum has a great display of authentic Welsh Love Spoons and much else besides. The volunteer staff were very welcoming and knowledgeable. All very smart and well looked after.Visited November 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 November 2024

Sadly cafe was closed - which seemed very odd for weekend.
But the library was good and I loved the idea of community jigsaw.
People of different ages fitted some pieces and chatted - local residents and tourists.
Lovely idea!
Perfect on a wet day without a cafe!
Toilets were clean.

Amazing town museum, art gallery and library all in one - and free to visit! What a wonderful find in the town of Brecon. Y Gaer is a Victorian fronted building (complete with mock Greek pillars) with an ultra modern, light and airy extension. The museum includes a reconstructed magistrates court and a further floor of local artefacts-including a wooden canoe from the Middle Ages. It also has gallery spaces and an inspirational library with lots of natural light

Surprisingly interesting visit to new arts hub, replacing the Brecon museum and art gallery. Wide variety of exhibits on display. Helpful staff in all areas. There is a full size courtroom and a schoolroom.
Best of all was a first class art exhibition, inclusing photographs, paintings and sculptures from other parts of Wales, selected by ordinary people when it was displayed on Instagram. This included moving tributes to coal mining and the Aberfan disaster. If all future exhibitions match up to this, it will definitely be worth a return visit.

Free admission to high-quality and interesting local museum. It houses Brecknock Museum, courthouse, Victorian classroom, galleries and Brecon Library. Spent a good couple of hours there - plenty to see, interactive displays. Friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit - not exactly "hidden" as it is a prominent building in the town, but could be easily missed as an "attraction"

There’s some interesting artefacts and history here, but personally I found a lack of coherence to the displays. Well displayed, just needs more of an introduction and logical sequence.

Stumbled across this free museum in Brecon and what a great find. Attached to a 19th century building is a light and airy 21st century community facility with library, art gallery and museum attached.
Plenty of local history with some fascinating items from Roman finds to the old court house and a Victorian school room.
Particularly strong set of work by local artists as well as items by more well-known painters.
A real gem.
