It was built sometime in the 12th century as a Chapel of Ease. A church a short walk away for those unable to visit the main parish church, the Benedictine Priory of Brecon. That is why there was no cemetery because the burials took place on the grounds of the Priory.
When the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon was formed in 1923, Brecon Priory became a cathedral and so St Mary's was redesignated as a parish church.
St. Mary's Church is located in the middle of Brecon and unfortunately the doors were closed and we could not look inside.

Popped in expecting to see the historical side of the church to see that it operates as a cafe and well populated it was too with tables along the aisles. So, in these changing times it is once again the heart of the community.

I find spirituality and comfort visiting Churches I've never been in. St. Mary's Church in Brecon is welcoming and a quiet, safe space to gather your thoughts and step away from the corrupt world outside, even if it's just for a moment in out time on this earth.
