Oxwich is a grand Tudor house, built in courtyard style. Gower is a marvel. Heritage buffs and beach bums alike love this beautiful peninsula. In years gone by, the wealthy built wherever the view suited. The Mansel family chose a lovely spot on a wooded headland above Oxwich Bay to build their dream home. Proper ‘des res’ — although not a proper castle — equipped with the latest luxuries, including inside toilets. Built in courtyard style, Sir Rice gave his manor a mock-military gateway complete with the family’s coat of arms proudly cut in stone. His son Edward went on to create the much grander multi-storeyed range. An elegant long gallery – a fashionable Elizabethan feature – was added, positioned high up, taking full advantage of the panoramic sea views.

It’s quite expensive for a short trip. The most fun to be had is trying on all the clothes and clambering into the beds, go for it! If you don’t do the quiz then the visit could be very short. We took our time and...More

Just enough of this Elizabethan Manor House remains to allow you to use your imagination into what it must have been like 400 years ago. The east wing, with its towering walls, must have been some sight.

A Disappointing visit. A very small ruin, although nice. We were round it in 15mins. If you're in the area, visit, but don't go out of your way.

Although less than 20 miles from Swansea, it's a long drive because of the roads and traffic on the ever popular Gower peninsula. The entrance and car park is up a steep hill, and for non Cadw members the entry fee is £4. The ticket...More

This is unpretentious history! A small castle with a big past and it is gradually being brought back to life so visitors can enjoy the amazing tales it has to tell. We have been coming here for years and just love the simplicity of it....More

The entry fee of £4 is a little steep for such a small manor house, however I was delighted to visit somewhere that invites visitors to try out the beds and an assortment of period costumes rather than the "please don't touch" signs you usually...More

Lovely little fortified castle with dovecote just a woodland walk above Oxwich beach, owned by CADW (English Heritage cards also accepted). One whole wing of the house is complete and upstairs, on the day we were there, they had great dressing up clothes for children...More

A beautiful castle/mansion, which we visited with friends with young children. 5 kids ranging from 4-8 and all of them loved exploring the grounds and the buildings. It was a misty and wet day which added to the atmospherics surroundings and well worth a visit.

This part of Wales has several old ruins, but this castle is still in decent condition, better than some others,in the area.

The medieval aspect was a tad amateurish. A lady showing archery at a nearby target and a man allowing mock sword fighting. But the grandchildren enjoyed, an dressing up in medieval costume! Lived in Swansea for 40 years and never visited. Not a lot to...More
