The Crumlin Road Gaol dates back to 1845 and closed it's doors as a working prison in 1996. After extensive renovations the gaol has re opened as a visitor attraction and conference centre. Today you can take a guided tour of the prison and hear about the history of the site from when women and children were held within it's walls through to the political segregation of republican and loyalist prisoners and learn about why the decision was taken to close the prison.During the tour of the gaol you will be taken by your tour guide to visit the underground tunnel that used to connect the gaol to the Crumlin Road Courthouse, you will get a chance to sit in the Governor's chair, view all the wings from the circle and of course pay a visit to the condemned mans cell before seeing the execution cell where the majority of the 17 men were hanged.

The building itself is in amazing condition and is architecturally beautiful and the history as explained by our tour guide is very interesting, if understanding this type of prison system is your thing. I would have liked more information on it's more recent history as related to the Troubles of 60's/70's as I felt this was glossed over.

This is a great opportunity to visit an historic gaol that has been used in very recent times. The interior has been restored to what it looked like in victorian times but some cells are furnished like they were at the time of closure in the mid 1990s. We visited all parts of the gaol from the prisoners reception room,... More

The quality of the tour guide can make.oe break this experience. I was lucky to have a good one and really enjoyed being behind bars, if only for a short time

I visited this 'attraction' on the way back to the airport and found it to be a very interesting and informative way to spend a few hours in Belfast. We had a great tour guide who was a good mix of entertaining and informative about the history of the Jail over the years and the characters that were imprisoned and... More

Visited the Gaol with three friends all on our first visit to Belfast, found it fascinating but more so when we realised others in the group had family who had been in there in the troubles and another who had been a Warner. Made it come alive

We were initially disappointed as the gaps between tours was quite long, we had to wait 40 minutes for the next tour and the small museum area didn't offer enough to occupy for that length of time. However, once the tour started my partner and I enjoyed it immensely. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and enjoyable to listen to... More

Visited the gaol and took the guided tour. The guide was friendly and seemingly well informed. The gaol has some interesting "guests"and the culmination of the tour is thought provoking and a little chilling. Well worth a visit.
