Perhaps nowhere else in the world can evoke the power of the romantic past...

Perhaps nowhere else in the world can evoke the power of the romantic past more than Abbotsford, stunningly located on the banks of the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders.

Abbotsford sits at the heart of the landscape that inspired the poetry and novels of its creator, Sir Walter Scott. Unlike the homes of other great writers, this is a house that the writer himself designed and as such uniquely embodies a physical representation of the Romantic Movement that he helped to create. When you touch the bricks and mortar of Abbotsford, you are touching the soul of Scott.

Our new FREE to access Visitor Centre is home to a Stylish Restaurant, Gift Shop and Exhibition on the life and legacy of Sir Walter Scott.

Pay once and have access all year. Good value for family and a great day out, interesting display in the house, grounds are well laid out and a walk down to the River Tweed is recommended. Cafe serves a acceptable range of foods down fall only two bottle beers to choice from. Small staff so patience necessary while waiting to... More

The visitors centre is larger than the actual tour of the house. It is very interesting for fans of Sir Walter Scott. My favourite part was the library and his special section of books on the occult. You take an audio tour either voiced by a generic voice/an actor portraying Sir Walter Scott, or the cat and dog of the... More

I dined here for lunch with a client from the area at his suggestion. The café area was bright, airy and spotlessly clean and we were seated at a small square table in front of the window with a blazing sun blinding you. The food was delicious but they were very small portions for the money. This did smack a... More

Really interesting place to visit. Walter Scott was such an amazing man when you read all about everything he did. Well worth a visit . The grounds are beautiful and you can go on a lovely walk through the trees and back along by the river

Liked the style of the 'tour' where you wander around the house at your own leisurely pace, just zapping laser points when you wanted to hear something. The grounds seem free to wander about in with payment being for the house being what keeps the maintenance and excellent visitor centre going. Turned up a little ignorant to the works of... More

After visiting Abbotsford House which we enjoyed we decided to have coffee and cake in the visitor centre. We ordered 2 coffees and scones which again we enjoyed however there was a young child with his mother and obviously his father was one of the serving staff running around unchecked and was seen by my husband and myself at a... The reception center is modern, large and serves wonderful baking in the upstairs cafe (try the scones). Cost is good value and the walk down to the house is very pleasant. In Abbotsford House use the audio tour which is included in the price. It is easy to use, allows you to pick and choose what you listen to, or... More

Even without having read much of the great man's works, it was fascinating to visit his house and hear about his life (and death) there. There's plenty to see and lots of information if you want it - I often get info overload very quickly on visits like this, but with an audio guide it's easy to have as much... More
