About
Verdant Works | Made in Dundee | One Mill | Many Stories Verdant Works is a world-class visitor attraction which tells the story of Dundee’s industrial textile heritage in the atmospheric setting of a beautifully refurbished Mill building which dates back to 1833. The story of jute and the story of Dundee are inseparable. The industry employed 50,000 people in the city at its peak and supplied much of the world’s demand for jute goods. As you explore the self-led museum at your own pace you will: – Soak up the atmosphere of the cobbled 19th century courtyard – Enter a busy jute office of 1900 and meet some characters of the period – Find out how jute was harvested in India, how and why it came to Dundee and more about Dundee’s bustling docks – Experience the deafening sounds of the machines and see the jute process from raw fibre to woven cloth – See a typical Dundee ‘plettie’, learn about tenement life and the health of the mill workers. – Discover who ‘kettle bilers’ were and all about the reversal of traditional gender roles in Dundee – finding out about mill girls, Suffragettes and the unions. – Visit the Victorian Half-Time School and also see how the workers spent their precious leisure time. – Enjoy drop in family activities in our specially designed Red Box learning hub – Learn about pattern casting, engineering and stop to pick up tips for researching local and family history in our History Hub – Appreciate the stunning mill architecture from the two viewing platforms in the High Mill – Watch in awe as the 1801 Boulton & Watt beam engine chugs into action … and don’t forget to stop by our gift shop and café to get a well-earned cup of tea and Dundee cake!

    Fantastic hidden gem
We were recommended this exhibition...I was so.impressed by the curating, the amazing history I knew nothing about and how it held my interest throughout. Very friendly staff too. We stayed so long we nearly missed going to V & A .

    Very enjoyable
This refers only to the cafe. We've just started visiting again post-Covid and found each visit to be a pleasure. Good food and friendly, courteous service. We did the museum tour a few years ago and intend doing so again. Just haven't got round to it!
Thank you for your review, it is much appreciated! We'll pass on your feedback to our cafe team. Hope to welcome you back soon!

    Excellent museum. Great staff.
This is probably the best “museum” I have been too. Without doubt the friendliest. The staff/volunteers are superb and the content and flow of the museum - for what is really a Jute museum at the end of the day - was exceptional. Very informative, lots of multi media/interactive stuff and the walk and talk through the machinery was brilliant. The social history stuff was great too and bonus of the photography exhibition whilst I was there. Loved it.
Thank you for your review, it is much appreciated! We are glad you enjoyed it so much and hope to welcome you back soon.

I love factory tours, but I wasn't sure how interesting jute could be. Turned out to be great. All of the equipment is in amazing condition and the exhibits were very interesting. Spent much longer here than I expected. Cute gift shop with great staff.

Your First Choice if Visiting Dundee
Yes, this is an extensive, detailed and informative museum about a product and an industry you couldn't find anywhere else. The range of exhibits, the different ways of presenting them, the historical and geographical connections- all went together to make a rich experience. Friendly staff who knew their subject. Forget about the V & A; make this your first choice in Dundee.

    Well worth a visit . . .
. . . truly represents the history of Dundee. Welcomed by enthusiastic staff and informative displays. Good to see others enjoying the same. Dundee deserves to have it's history cherished . . . and indeed rejuvenated.

Verdant works as a Wedding venue
What an amazing place and a fantastic team. We had our whole wedding here and it couldn't have been a better experience. The backgrounds to photographs are spectacular and it was great to show our Dundee Heritage to our family and friends. A shout out to Elle who led us through our journey and was always happy to assist. Food was also great and friends and family couldn't have been complimentary about the whole day. Thank you all for making our day so special.
Thank you so much for your 5 star review! We're delighted that you enjoyed your special day so much and will pass on your feedback to Elle and the team.

One of the best museums we have visited in a very long time.
My husband and I visited this fascinating museum during a tour of Scotland’s East Coast. It is situated in Dundee, about 20 minutes walk from our hotel down near the Tay and the new V & A. It is a little hidden away but not too tricky to find. It is dedicated to the history of the city’s important Jute industry, that dominated the economic life of Dundee for many many decades. It also however, covers the lives of those who worked in the industry, and considers its relationship with shipping, ship-building and whaling, three other pivotal industries for the city. The museum is situated in a handsomely restored jute mill. The workings of the industry and the raw material is explained, and there are opportunities to see many of the original machines operating. The many uses are shown, with interesting and imaginative exhibits. If all this sounds slightly dry and school-like, please don’t allow me to mislead you, because it is not. The volunteers who show you round and demonstrate the machines are knowledgable, enthusiastic and amusing, and endlessly helpful. The two best bits, for me were: First, the amazing Boulton and Watt Steam Engine from 1801. This is so rare, because it is so old, and still in working order (though not with steam) making this of world class importance as an exhibit. And it was made in my own home town, Brum! Second, the superb, original, immaculately preserved, office, with the huge wooden desks and filing cabinets, the ancient typewriter and copying tool for making duplicates of letters. Brilliant. There is also a nice little shop, a very good café and excellent, clean loos. We thought this was one of the most interesting and best staffed museums we have visited in ages. Thank you very much for a great visit.
Thank you so much for your kind words - we are so pleased to hear you enjoyed your visit as much as you did! We'll pass on your wonderful feedback to the rest of the team, who will be delighted. Hope to welcome you back again!

    Interesting place
I really enjoyed looking around this fascinating place. John the volunteer gave a lot of insights into the textile industry in Dundee. The exhibits were easy to navigate as well. Has some Dundee cake in the cafe. Prices are reasonable and the staff are friendly.
Thank you very much for your 5-star review! We will pass your lovely words on to John and the rest of the team. Hope to welcome you back again!

Don’t miss this excellent museum - an eye opener on Dundee’s past!
Lovely visit to this museum and learned so much (think yourself lucky you weren’t born poor in Dundee in the 1800s). We were only in Dundee for an overnight stay and so glad we’d organised a visit here. Everything was very well organised and presented and the staff were great. We can heartily recommend the cafe! We bought tickets in advance in conjunction with Discovery Museum and saved a lot of money. Not to be missed!
Thank you very much for your lovely review! We are glad you enjoyed your visit so much and hope to see you again soon. Thanks!

Visited yesterday - all the staff are friendly and we were particularly fortunate to have Alison Thomson as our guide who was extremely knowledgeable and made the tour very interesting. The museum is fascinating and we in Dundee are extremely lucky to have such a wonderful tourist attraction.
Perhaps more sign-posts and advertising may be advantageous to encourage more visitors because it is most definitely worth a visit.

We live locally but had not visited Verdant Works for many years, it’s is well worth a visit, so interesting and educational, lots of hands on exhibits, will certainly return and not wait several years. We had a very knowledgeable guide but plenty of time to review all the exhibits so beautifully displayed, well worth a visit.

An extremely interesting museum. We were welcomed by a friendly man and the volunteers were very knowledgeable and we never felt rushed. The whole process of the production of jute was very well explained and the importance of the mills to Dundee. The history of the workforce and their living conditions was an eye opener to us not being from Scotland. The soup in the cafe was delicious as well. A great experience.

Such a fascinating look into the history of Dundees jute industry. We were introduced to the mill tour by a lovely lady who volunteers there. She shared her personal experience and her knowledge.
The tour was very interesting and we got an amazing insight into the lives of those who worked there. We met an astonishing volunteer, Lily… 86 years young who started work in the mill as a 14 year old. She demonstrated a few of the machines and we experienced just how noisy the machines were hence the reason so many of the workers had serious hearing loss. Don’t miss out the social history part of the exhibition where you see first hand how harsh their living conditions were …… the ‘cludgie’ had us all in fits of laughter. But in reality, there was no humour in how those workers lived 😢😢

We visited with our 8-year-old and we all really enjoyed our visit! Really informative and interesting, and a great mix of interactive exhibits for kids.

The social history floor provided a really fascinating insight into life in Dundee.

We also enjoyed soup and cheese scones in the cafe! We would highly recommend Verdant Works to all ages.

Despite many trips to Dundee this was our first visit to this museum and we absolutely loved it. Fascinating to learn about the history of jute and its impact on Dundee. Told really well through film, pictures and a chance to see Industrial Revolution machinery first hand.

Very interesting, well organized and informative museum. Really gives you an insight to the city of Dundee and the rise & fall of its Jute industry.
A guide introduced the tour the. You were given a map where interactive and informative plaques led you on your journey through the mill. There were activitysheets/treasure hunts, interactive games and rubbings of various kinds for the children. Films were well worth a watch.
Lovely coffee shop and gift shop to top it off.
