Neighbourhood: Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.

    Great Visit, fantastic staff
Visiting Edinburgh for work and wound up with a few hours to kill between meetings and was pointed in the direction of this fantastic place on a quiet Monday afternoon. Wasn't busy at all, but the staff were still full of enthusiasm and keen to chat. Makes a huge difference when you're on your own. Was even invited to stick around for a second planetarium show, which really was a nice gesture and saved a wander back out into the pouring rain, but also let me take in 2 very interesting shows.

    amazing gift shop!
me, my husband and our 19 year old son visited today. it started off pretty slow with the tour, very outdated. but as soon as we reached the gift shop it made up for it all. the staff were so lovely. answered any questions we had and directed us to where we need to go. i believe we were served by Bethan ? very good customer service. a gentleman, i believe his name was Rohail, took us upstairs and directed us to our bus. 10/10 experience.

    Unexpected delight
What a brilliant attraction plenty to entertain the young and not so young. There is also an important message through the presentations. The staff are enthusiastic and informative and 2 hours just flew by, you even get caught in a snow shower at one point. Highly recommended just needs to be better sign posted.

    Fun afternoon
This was a fun, interactive experience on the history of the Earth (5+ billion years of it). Many school groups when we went, but plenty to keep adults engaged. The planetarium shows are a bit of a mixed bag. The are many during the day, some are a little repetitive and some are a little bit of a downer (I agree that climate change is bad and we need to do more right now, I'm not sure we are all doomed :)

Kids will enjoy learning about geology
This is a rare science museum focused on geology where the displays are suitable for children of a wide range of ages. The architecture of the museum itself was beautiful as were the views of Holyrood Park. The cafe was corporate-cafeteria like but had good food at good values.
Hi TokyoSean, Thank you kindly for taking the time to review us. We strive to deliver our educational content in a fun and engaging way for all ages! We are so lucky to have an incredible landmark on our doorstep, and we are glad you enjoyed the view! Our team will be thrilled to hear your kind feedback. We hope to welcome you back soon! 🌍

    A place worth returning to
We attended the 50th anniversary of the release of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon". This entailed the playing of the album from start to finish accompanied by a specially commissioned film that was projected onto the dome in the Planetarium. It was a great experience and has given us a brief taste of the complex which we will now return to in order to experience the other shows etc.
Hi pajoph57, Thank you for taking the time to review us. We are so thrilled to hear you enjoyed our ever popular planetarium show Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side of the Moon"! Absolutely loved it!
Dynamic Earth really inspired me. It's really interactive and information is easy to comprehend for all ages. It is highly sustainable and has great accessibility arrangements (ramps for wheelchair users and a lift).

Our best ever interactive science experience.
We went to Dynamic Earth with our 14 years old daughter and 9 years old son yesterday as a final day experience during our three day visit to Edinburgh. All four of us found this to be by far the best interactive science experience that we have ever had (and we’ve been to all the major London museums a few times). The attention to minute detail in every section was amazing e.g. the impressive large, revolving globe at entrance and the super-realistic earthquake experience. My son liked the rhino approaching us up close in the trip to Africa the best. Well done to all the team who make Dynamic Earth so much fun for adults and children alike. Dr K Shehzad

    Brilliant planetarium
The planetarium was excellent in both shows we viewed (1 the history of stars, and 2 natural disasters). Staff were all very friendly and helpful, and cafe was reasonably priced. The rest of the museum was also good, however aimed at a slightly younger audience than two 30 somethings!
Hi Joe_Railwayman, Thank you for your kind feedback. We are so glad to hear your experience was a friendly one. We do try to aim our centre towards people of all ages, but we will certainly take your feedback on board! We hope to see you again soon 🌍

Great family entertainment, reasonably priced cafe, great planetarium & interactive experience.
Visited with my 14 year old who had never been to a planetarium - it didn't disappoint! We watched the "what's up? " star gazing film in the planetarium, which was great. The cafe was fairly priced - a welcome change for attraction cafes which often take liberties with their captive audience. Staff throughout were enthusiastic and engaging & the whole experience was fun. In places it was geared to a younger audience & in others older audiences (star formation), so it struck the right balance for good family entertainment, which can be tricky to achieve. We really enjoyed it and would deffo recommend it.
Hi rebeccaF997VN Thank you for your wonderful feedback. Our planetarium team will be delighted to hear their efforts delivering our live shows are well appreciated! We aim for our centre to be inclusive for all ages, so we are glad you had an entertaining time, and hope to welcome you back soon! 🌍

We went for the day as a family age ranges 5 to 72. There was something in the displays to suit everyone. The virtual reality section was marvellous. We were disappointed in the planetarium. We were expecting to learn about planets and galaxies but instead we learnt about saving the environment. My son, aged 42 said it was like Propaganda. We knew about most of it already. I have been to planetariums before and they have always been about outer space.
The food was not good at all. The dishes were all dried up and overheated. .The staff were young and needed a supervisor to guide them. They were very busy. Perhaps they should think about offering alternative more healthy options. The food was also expensive. Even the tea was awful. We were wishing we had brought a picnic.

We spent a pleasant two hours at Dynamic Earth. It is well put together and has something for all ages documenting the history of our planet and universe. The planetarium talk was fascinating and we enjoyed the interactive elements of the displays.

The place is great for first time visiting it, but since it was our second time it was not so impressive any more. The 11 years girl was actually bored but for the 6 years old was interesting.
But i will defenatly recomand this experience for families with kids not bigger then 8-9 years old.

Visited Dynamic Earth to check out public transport, parking, accessibility, cafe, events and pricing. Events looked exciting for children in the school holiday. Unfortunately it would be against my principles to encourage this kind of price structure. Museums and art galleries in the city generally have excellent catering franchises. But chips with everything is not one that appeals. We will not be visiting with the family.

Unfortunately we were pressed for time and some technical issues meant we had to miss bits of the full experience (time lift not working).
Got to see the planetarium show.
We were maybe a bit old among the little kids but still enjoyed ourselves.

We had a horrible experience there. My teen daughter, my mum and I visited this place on 4th of April. Firstly, we were overcharged, instead of £46.30 we were charged £64.30 (!!!) and didn’t get a receipt, which makes me think the cashier realised the mistake, but decided not to tell us. I realised it only when I checked my bank statement later that day because, again, no receipt was given. We’ve been told that there is self audio guide in multiple languages and someone will assist us on it. We were taken to the first room of the exhibition and everything was in English, no self audio guides were available, we found them later, with no instructions - but Russian language wasn’t an option, which is frustrating as everywhere else in Edinburgh my mum was able to enjoy full experience and understand everything (she doesn’t speak or understand English). Not in this place. The whole place designed for little children. I’d say it can be interesting for 4-8 years old kids (that’s why I generously give it 2 stars), anyone older than that will be bored. Graphics and designs are outdated. Planetarium was in English only (!!) and three was a movie clip for little kids about the importance of recycling and ecosystem. Everyone in the room who was older than 7-8 seemed very bored and disappointed about this clip. The worst thing - you can’t leave, you have to finish this planetarium experience, 25 minutes wasted. The staff is very unenthusiastic. I had a feeling that we bother them, almost wanted to apologise for inconvenience.
We did not enjoy it at all. Maybe, it’s just not for us. But I would very much appreciate if someone could get back to me so we can solve it.
Thank you

Fabulous experience at Dynamic Earth. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The planetarium was especially engaging, the presenter was top class and managed to keep the varied audience engaged. Most of all the staff (mostly young) were friendly, knew their stuff and worked hard to make sure we had a good time. The cafe staff managed to remain cheerful but efficient despite being extremely busy. The calibre of staff make Dynamic Earth as good as it is. Well done all.

We decided to take a trip not knowing much about the place in advance and only allowed a short time to visit. That was a mistake!
We planned on going for the planetarium not realising how much else there was to do, sadly we had to rush though most of it but what we experienced was fantastic and we plan on returning and dedicating a lot more time to explore this gem.
Dynamic earth makes learning fun and anything that does that deserves high praise.

Interesting 2 to 3 hours with my son. It was very interactive and my son did learn a few things. The earth, it's a deep subject but they managed to keep my sons interest for the visit. I enjoyed it too, although needed a rest in the rnd. Recomend.
