Holyrood Park is a unique historic landscape in the heart of the city, whose dramatic crags and hills give Edinburgh its distinctive skyline. Within the park is a wealth of history and archaeology spanning thousands of years. Arthur's Seat is one of four hill forts, dating from around 2,000 years ago. As well as it's rich cultural heritage, the park offers walks, solace, wildlife, volcanic geology and unparalleled vistas of the city from its many vantage points.

The authorities need to have a few minutes of grace period for visitors. We missed the last entry time by 3 minutes and the folks would not accomodate. Was not able to see inside as we were leaving the very next day.

It is a lovely, safe path uphill. Almost from the beginning a fantastic view of Edinburgh is given. Absolutely a trip worth!

We spent the afternoon in Holyrood Park. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery. It is a great place to hike. Afew more directional signs would be helpful to visitors from outside the area.

It was a delight to find this little bit of wild landscape so close to the middle of the city. We took a couple of hours to do a short walk taking in Arthur's seat. Taking in the view from the top was great way to start our visit to the city as we got a good sense of the... More

Nice area to enjoy a sunny day. Bring some sandwiches and lunch or enjoy a twilight dinner at the top.

Definetly worth taking a trip up the mountain, the view is....... stop at the tea rooms at Holyrood before hand, top up on fluids before embarking the ascent well worth the effort.

There are several ways to reach the top (Arthur's seat); some are longer and others shorter. We started from the path next to Holyrioodhouse Palace and in a few hours we walked around the park to Arthur's Seat, St. Anthony's Chapel and back to the bottom (Queen's Dr.). Great views of the city, fresh air and a bit of hiking... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
