My husband and I did this tour yesterday afternoon. The guide Nora was very good and informative. She gave us a sense of what it would have been like to have worked or lived underground. We enjoyed the tour but I used the torch app that I have on my phone to shine on the ground as it's very uneven... More

Been wanting to do one of these ghost walks for years now and finally had the chance few weeks ago. Cost £32 for 2 adults with promise of an evening of spooky tales and history around Edinburgh. Sadly was left disappointed as followed around a guide who clearly had drama school drop out issues using the same descriptive words for... More

Booked this walking tour of The Secrets of The Royal Mile before our visit. It went ahead despite the weather, very windy, heavy rain and cold!! Martin our guide was very knowledgeable and kept everyones interest throughout the tour.

The 9pm Ghost Tour was fantastic! Our guide Linda was brilliant in telling the stories of the gruesome and spooky. The underground vaults definitely have a scary feeling to them. The tour was an hour which is the perfect amount of time. An organised and professionally run tour.

Simon and Sam were the best tour guides we could have asked for during this tour. The walking tours can sometimes be very distracting for some people and can feel laborious and boring for others, but these two made the tour a lot of fun for everyone. We were engaged in a history tour worthy of 5 out of 5,... More

We did the 3pm day tour to the vaults. This is a good thing to do if you are in the area and want to get involved in a very good tour. It starts off with a warm welcome and a bit of audience participation in the first story to be told by the tour guides who on this occasion... More

We took the tour as a family treat for a birthday and everyone agreed that it was an excellent choice. If I had to be critical, I would say, "watch your feet if you're a bit unsteady on them", but that should be expected on an underground tour in dimly lit vaults. Our guide, Linda, was so natural, knowledgeable and... More

Took the secrets or Edinburgh tour through the castle with William and he was just fantastic! He kept it really interesting and also really really funny. I can't say I have learned so much while laughing. Even in the frigid snowy weather he kept going. We were so grateful to have such a fantastic guide!

Very enjoyable tour with guide Stephanie in Edinburgh's old town and South Bridge Vaults with tales of the city history and paranormal hauntings. The tour ended with a whisky or beer tasting while listening to more frightening stories in the nice underground cellar at the Vaults. Highly recommended!

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
