Came all the way up from Newcastle for a birthday party and it was well worth the trip. Booked a booth with one of their packages (tasty fish bowls) and the booth was right next to the dancefloor. Great drinks with even better music. Only downside is, you need a map to find the toilets.

I was here with a couple of friends a few weeks ago and had a blast. We ventured in on the top floor, greeted by some lovely live music. We had no idea how much more to the place there was. Throughout the night we made out way through the building, it was great to just be able to change... More

Group of us came to watch a show, most of us headed downstairs, one friend went to the loo, friend who went to the loo was then denied access and removed from the building, no signal in the building to get in touch with the rest of us. Ridiculous. No regard for customer safety. Surely a concern of a venue's... More

Hi, We do apologise at how this issue was dealt with. Access to the rooms during the Festival is restricted by capacity and should a room be full, no one else would have been permitted access. The person at the door of the room would have been a member of the Free Festival and not an employee of Espionage as... More

I'm usually sceptical of reviews where people claim to be blameless when ejected from venues as my experience has always been that people are asked to leave with at least some justification. Be assured however that the reviews for this venue are completely true. After around an hour inside, my partner and I were heading up the stairs to an... More

Avoid this venue! I was one designated driver in a group of 12 people, visiting Espionage to see a comedy act during the Fringe. After buying drinks for a couple of my friends, I went to use the toilet, intending to join my group a few minutes later, one level down. A member of staff rudely told me I couldn't... More

At 2 in the morning while slightly drunk I managed to get myself in an argument outside about someone's chauvinistic attitude. As I then tried to go back into the bar the bouncer turned around put his arm out and just said 'no', no explanation just 'no'. As I tried to explain to him that my phone was out of... More

We were pr-ed to come into here...when we arrived...we realised that we were the ONLY people in here...and understood why they were so desperate to get us in. When we got in, we went up to the 3rd floor where we were pleasantly surprised that the music was great and the lady DJ was fantastic! Playing such a fantastic array... More

I go to the Edinburgh fringe every year with friends and we always go to this bar. There's several different floors and they always have the best free comedy shows with different acts on each floor all day. The drinks can be expensive but that's to be expected and doesn't bother me at all. Staff are nice enough and it... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
