Charlotte Square is a beautiful example of Edinburgh's New Town. The ornate buildings are truly spectacular and are part of the wider area of Georgian architecture which forms the New Town which is UNESCO listed. There are some well known faces to be seen in the area and one of the properties in the square is known locally as Krankies... More

Charlotte Square across the street from our luxury condominium was three blocks from Princes Street along a main road and a residential community. The architecture in the area was beautiful neo-classical, the park trees stately, and it was calm park just within the city center. We enjoyed the Book Fair located at the park during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

This stunning 18th Century Square in New Town is one of the finest Neo-Classical squares in the Britain. Robert Adam was the key architect. The west side has a large Neo-Classical building with a tower (which was formerly a church) situated between two large mansion houses which are all part of a connected row. On the north side one of... More

One of our favourite places to go in August, in Edinburgh. A convergence of books, readers and authors for 2 weeks. Prettymuch something for everyone from 3 to 93. You mightget it signed to. Free admission to the festival tickets go very quickly for events but its great to hang out and read (anddrink coffee or something stronger). Highly recommended!

It's a nice enough square on foot. Shame that the gardens in the centre are inaccessible. Traffic around it is poorly managed and you often get clarted up when driving, which needs addressed.

Charlotte Square is where the Edinburgh Book Festival is setup during the Edinburgh Festivals Season. Right in the heart of the city at the west end of George street the Charlotte Square gardens seem an oasis of calm on a nice August evening when the book events are in full swing. Attend an event, browse the bookshop or enjoy a... More

The square was large with a beautiful statue in the center but there was no access as all the gates were locked. The architecture of the buildings around the square were however worth the visit to see the classic Georgian architecture. They included Butte House the residence of the First Minister and the restored house of Robert Adams.

A lovely quiet square in the heart of the New Town in Edinburgh. A great place to escape the crowds of Princes Street for a short break.

It has been many years since I last visited my ancestral homeland but each visit brings a tear to my eye. The charm of the old world; the history is overwhelming and never ceases to bring a lump to my throat

This is the ONLY area to stay in Edinburgh. Everything is absolutely steps away: attractions, restaurants, bars, park... Would not stay anywhere else

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
