Recently participated in this unusual walking tour which is situated a little off the main centre of events on Infirmary Street. Our host, Colin, delivered his script with the ease of one who has done so before. I've read the books but my other half hasn't but she enjoyed the rib taking which Colin dished out to the non readers... More

Long weekend in Edinburgh with Bro & Sis in law, he & me have read the books our wives have not. We weren't sure how it it would work out but Colin quickly identified the non readers and with good and gentle humour chided them throughout the tour. He reads well and brings context to the page (not personally a... More

Colin does a terrific tour of Edinburgh and Rebus books - even for a non-Rebus reader! The readings add an extra dimension to the sights and parts of Rebus stories.

We went on a lovely sunny dry Saturday, 7th October. My husband hasn't ever read a Rebus book and he really enjoyed the walk. It's a mix of Rebus and local history (both are linked but Colin made it very enjoyable). I haven't read some of the earlier books for some time. I started with Knots and Crosses again that... More

Spent a lovely sunny but cold day on this tour. The group met at the Royal Oak pub, which features in a book, it is a lovely cosy wee pub. Colin was excellent, really informative and funny. There were reading aplenty from the books. Loved to see some of the locations from the books, I have read them all waiting... More

Had a great time on this Rebus tour with Colin. He was so enthusiastic and entertaining the whole way round. There is also lots of local history thrown in amongst the rebus facts! Colin also did readings from the books which I thought were great. I took my parents who are Rebus fans but don't make the mistake I did... More

Enjoyed this tour for taking in some of the key locations in the Rebus novels and the wider literary connections and anecdotes.

I've never read a rebus but thoroughly enjoyed this walking tour with Colin Brown. Beware admitting to be a non Rankin devotee!

To be honest, I didn't know this was a Rebus tour when I booked, as it was just described as "Hidden Edinburgh"! Fortunately, though, I had seen the Rebus series on telly, and had read a few books, so I didn't feel totally left out; and in any event, the many sights and facts Colin exposed us to on the... Thanks to the Fringe we finally made it on a Rebus Tour with Colin. He made a rather good job on this 2 hours walking tour. He read parts of the books on various places that are mentioned in the books and delivered historical plus modern facts and figures. Some places are off the beaten touristic tracks, which was great.... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
