About
St Andrews Botanic Garden is a living research and conservation experiment where we explore the ways ecology and evolution unfold in the plant kingdom - right at the heart of historic St Andrews. We're home to some of the most dynamic plants and habitats, from both Fife and around the world. We aim to address the new combination of challenges the natural world is facing with positivity, creating an ecologically vibrant place to explore and learn about evolution and botany. Our newest addition is the Tangled Bank, showcasing the very best of North East Fife plant life. Incorporating sand dunes, meadows, glades, meandering grass paths and a boardwalk, the Tangled Bank is a beautiful space to spend time. Our Visitor Centre offers hot & cold drinks and sweet treats, as well as our Gift Shop and Plant Sale.

    Fantastic attraction
Well worth the money, shame it was so quiet when we visited. Shame they can't attract the hundreds of tourists and visitors to the town. Well worth the admission price. Flowers and landscape is absolutely beautiful.
Hi Steven, thank you for leaving us a review, we hope this will help encourage others to visit as you mention! We're so glad you found the Garden beautiful and felt it was good value

A modern take on a botanic garden
Never been before I was blown away with it, 2 trips in our holiday week. I would say this is a modern botanic gardens. It is looking to change the way we look at nature and our perspectives on plants. It is so family friendly, they have a fantastic play area and tons of space for picnics and fun. I think if you want to see the same stuff that you see in most botanic gardens, this is not the place for you. However, if you want to see something modern and forward thinking- you will enjoy this experience! Thanks so much for producing something which captures the minds of younger generations and helping to protect our planet to ensure their future.
Thank you so much for your lovely review! It means so much to our team to hear from visitors who have enjoyed spending time in the Garden together and are excited by our mission - being forward thinking and protecting plants for the future health of our planet are key parts of our work. We've got lots more to come over the next few months so if you're in St Andrews again please pop back for another visit!

    Worth a look, pleasant surprise
When we visit the area for a day trips we usually buy some ice cream and head to the beach , this time we were in the area for slightly longer and decided to visit the botanic gardens, we had always seen the signpost but had never went for a look. What a pleasant surprise we got, a lovely secluded area when we could just wander at our leisure enjoying all the plants and wildlife we came across. We would return again. Not the cheapest entry fees but we felt on this occasion we got value for money.

Never been back since the Vogons took over and turned the place into a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
Imagine the disgrace of getting rid of the precious collection of rare plants and cactus that could have been such an asset to science or medecine or replenishing lost species in the field. They're not botanists, they're vandals.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us such a creative review! Our changes in management of the Garden are part of a carefully considered strategy, backed by our Biodiversity Plan, to shift our focus towards research and conservation of Fife's native habitats and comparable ecosystems around the world. Instead of focusing on individual plants, we consider our Garden as a series of habitats in which we can study how plants interact. There are lots of wonderful botanic gardens in the UK studying plants from other biomes, and by focusing on our niche of temperate plants we're able to concentrate on the research and conservation projects that we're best placed for and will make the biggest impact. We recognise that our native plants can be just as rare, beautiful and valuable as those found in desert or tropical climates and that it's vitally important that native plants, and the ecosystems they are found in, are understood and conserved. If you'd like to understand our work better, you're very welcome to drop our team an email at info@standrewsbotanic.org

Such a lovely day here, it’s so peaceful and relaxing. There are lots of areas to sit and watch the world go by. We also saw a red squirrel and a deer while wandering around.

It’s difficult to know where to start … but we have visited countless botanical gardens in Scotland, the rest of the UK and indeed abroad.

Very sadly, and it’s a great shame, that this botanical garden is NOT one I wished we’d gone out of our way to visit.

Borders which are meant to be tendered have not been looked after. Areas which are more ‘natural’ are simply a mess. There were only a very few areas that looked ‘ok’.

I don’t accept that this botanical garden is meant to look the way it is. This is nonsense. A change of management is required as this botanical garden deserves better.

I left wishing I could have my money back ie £12 for 2 people.

Went to St Andrews" Botanic Garden" shocked to find total destruction of what was once a Go to See location. It is mis represented as a Botanic garden and is a "wilding park " with no care and attention required.
St Andrews you can do better
Butterfly greenhouses destroyed and now piles of rubble and weeds under the guise of biodiversity and wilding. No trace of the botanical plant specimens once housed there
Rock gardens are recognisable only because the rocks are still there . Fine specimens of plants now overgrown with weeds.
Pond is still there but cant see it for shoulder high weeds and overgrown shrubs.
The rhododendron section is barely recognisable and another year should see it totally destroyed!
There are plenty of seats if you want to view overgrown grass areas.
I wont be back and will inform everyone I know of the sad demise of St Andrews Botanical Garden.
Any positive reviews must be from those who have no idea what a botanical garden is

Hi Ian, thank you for leaving us feedback. I believe you've been in contact with our team by email too, but I just wanted to reiterate that our current changes in the Garden are not the result of destruction or neglect, and are instead a carefully considered strategy, backed by our Biodiversity Plan, to shift our focus towards research and conservation of Fife's native habitats and comparable ecosystems around the world. A botanic garden is a living scientific collection which can be used for education and scientific & technical research, and our approach allows us to achieve this more than ever.

Disappointing to realise that despite retaining ‘botanic’ in its title it has forsaken the original aim of the gardens.
The welcome from the two young ladies was superb but having driven 45 miles specifically to see the flora observed on a previous visit we were greatly disappointed.
Learning that the greenhouses have now been been demolished seals the fact we will not be returning.
Incidentally the highlight of our visit was meeting a 93-year-old fellow Chartered Accountant whilst enjoying lunch in the cabin.

Vandalism of what was once a beautiful Botanic Gardens. Glasshouses are just rubble , it’s not rewinding , that’s an excuse - it’s neglect. Place is full of weeds it’s just a glorified play park. Waste of money - shan’t return and would discourage anyone else from parting with their cash.

Hi Gail, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. The area which used to house our greenhouses is being developed into our "Meanwhile Garden" - a space for us to explore the new features which will be included in our innovative new Biocene Garden. You can find out more about this in our blog, including why we've incorporated rubble from the greenhouses into the new garden. We would encourage anyone with questions about the newest areas of the Garden to find out more about them by chatting to our team.
