Down a little alleyway, away from the maddening crowd, I glance up at an unassuming sign, fail to notice its’ name and entered a book lovers’ heaven.
Every book imaginable, the offer of coffee whilst I browsed, the comfy sofa for children to sit and fall in love with reading. I find most if not all the writings by an author, not just their famous ones. I ask for a recommendation and the staff are helpful, knowledgable and introduce titles that surprise and delight me.
There is a little shelf of books wrapped in brown paper by forgotten or unknown authors - you’re given a short blurb and nothing else - like a blind date, incidentally that is what it’s called - the blind date shelf. You decide whether to pick a book and go on that date and or walk past and head towards the familiar.
Loaded with an armful of books and a happy child, I leave with a heavy heart, wanting to spend more time browsing and discovering.
As I was leaving, I remembered to look up again and note the name of the place “Topping & Company”, so that my child and I may return again and again.

This was our first experience at a Toppings bookstore. We loved it! It was clean, tidy, and all the staff were very friendly. I was served a pot of coffee and a cookie while my son shopped. The whole experience was wonderful.

What a wonderful place with fantastic staff. If you love books you could spend half a day here looking at the fantastic selection.

It's become more a pilgrimage than just a casual visit. Whenever I'm in St. Andrews then I will always pop my head in most of the days I'm visiting.
And it's nice to have the odd cup of tea in there as well.
I asked if they do camping facilities so I don't have to leave, turns out they don't.

What a wonderful selection of books and such care. Fantasy section was a treasure trove of special editions. They had even dust covered the dust cover of the first edition I picked up. Wife equally impressed elsewhere in the cavernous shop. If you love books don't miss this place. I have read they even do free coffee but I was too busy shelf scanning.

This bookstore is centrally located in St Andrews and has a lovely lay out and friendly staff. I didn’t like that the books had no stickers and I guess just are as priced on the book jacket. Not sure why this bothered me really, maybe I’m just used to shopping at used bookstores. One of the books I was interested in buying was £35 on the jacket but when I googled was £17.50 new on Amazon so I had to go Amazon and I would have definitely bought it from the store even if it was a little less than jacket price, to support the store, but I gotta eat, so couldn’t get away with it this time around. I also wasn’t impressed at all with the religion section. For a town that is up to its ears in church history, the religion section seemed to have more anti-God books on display than much else. Or maybe that’s just the slant of the person who displayed the section but I found that to be really disappointing. If I’m going to a religion section it’s usually not to find books on why religion is bad. Although I can see why some might be there but in my opinion, there were a lot more than some. I also think the music section could have been a bit more exciting…. Anyway, the bookstore is nice and like I said, very friendly staff. Worth a check out, I would say!

This is the type of bookshop most towns and cities should have. I won't go into detail why it is so good, just go if you are near. If you aren't near, make the effort to go. If any staff catch prospective customers checking the price of a book on Amazon on their phone whilst in the shop, they should be allowed do very unpleasant things to them.
If you don't buy anything for yourself or as a gift when you are here, you haven't tried.

If you like books, this is the place to go! So many wonderful books, many are signed by the respective author. Offered tea or coffee on arrival and the manager was really helpful with finding the right books. Could have spent all day there!
