Martyrs' Monument in St Andrews. Situated on the promenade in St Andrews overlooking West Sands Beach and also very close to the bandstand.

Martyrs' Monument in St Andrews, is located nearby to West Sands Beach, close to the Bandstand. It is there to commemorate protestant martyrs. Also lovely view of West Sands Beach from that spot.

Great views of the North Sea; tribute to men put to death for religious views from almost 200 years ago.

If you are passing from the car park at the Golf Museum or visiting the Aquarium it would be worth a peep past and to read the info board. I don't think i would make a special visit as it is a quite standard monument otherwise. Built for religious martyrs from the past.

This obelisk monument was built to honour the Protestant martyrs during the turmoil of the 16th century reformation. Specifically the monument is for the 4 men condemned to death by fire. Those men were Patrick Hamilton, Henry Forest, George Wishart, and Walter Myln.

Whether you are religious or not, this monument to martyrs who were executed for following the Protestant religion provides a very good insight into this important aspect of Scotland’s history. And although I knew all about the Covenanters and their cause from my history lessons as a wee boy at school, I didn’t realise that St Andrews had played such a prominent role.

We strolled this area along the beach and up to University. The monument is truly striking and educational. Flowers and grounds along here are gorgeous with awesome views of North Sea. Worth taking the time to visit.
