Best kept secret is that this area has some of the beautiful and accessible low level walking in U.K., much of it in the amazing ancient 'Caledonian' pine forest of Rothiemurchus, with a great network of paths easily reached from Hilton Coylumbridge.
For a 6 year old would recommend taking the path in the hotel grounds through the woods to Coylumbridge, cross the 'ski' road into the forest at the campsite entrance, then you can return to the hotel along the Old Logging Way off road path which has an exit directly opposite the hotel entrance.
If you have a car we would recommend that you drive 11/2 miles to Loch an Eilein - stunning. Perfect for a 6 year old with an 14C ruined island castle in the middle of the loch (lake), a path all the way round, loos and attended parking for a small charge.
You can collect a map of walks from Rothiemurchus Centre, 1/2 mile from Hilton towards Aviemore and they can also give you advice on the best walks and other activities you might love doing together, such as feeding Red Deer or visiting the only herd of Reindeer in U.K.
No lying snow on the 'low' ground but it is getting colder and there is still some snow on the mountains.
Hope you have a wonderful visit.
