While in Galway, I had the opportunity to attend a trad session at crane bar. So glad that I did! It started closer to 10pm, which is fine by me. Seemed like a gathering of locals that were having a great time playing together that happened to have a bunch of people watching, which is to say, it was enjoyable.... More

Loved the feel of this bar and there were lots of locals, which I saw as a good sign. Trad music downstairs (where we were). Also music upstairs. Only down side was no credit/debit cards. If we had known ahead could have planned better.

Had a glass of Guinness while wandering around Galway's shops and pubs. The Crane has a great reputation for music, but unfortunately I couldn't stick around. The bartender was very nice and chatted with me while I drank my beer.

Many Irish Trad sessions and pubs are overrun with tourists, and it's impossible to see it without spending a day waiting around. This place is a hidden gem, off the beaten path in Galway. They have an upstairs music room that isn't unlocked until the music is ready to begin. On a weeknight, the room will be full, but not... More

A rustic old bar. At 10 pm about 2 dozen young adults with instruments play upstairs. One of the best nights of our trip.

We went on Sunday afternoon at 2 and had the best possbile experience - the people, the ambience of the place, the musicians. Just great. Lots of other musicians joined in, some amazing singers, and they just kept going all afternoon. We left around 5, intending to return for the evening session. Which we did. Started around 10, in the... More

This was my first visit to the Crane Bar - even though I had heard about it being a good place for traditional music. There was a music session advertised to start in the downstairs bar at 1pm on Sunday - so we got there about that time. There were just 2 people in the place , one of them... More

So you are in Galway, and you are thirsty, and tired of tinned music. Walk over the bridge to the West side and find The Crane. While he's pulling you a creamy Guinness, ask the barman when the live music begins (upstairs or down). Nurse your Guinness and chat with a local. You will probably find a fellow tourist or... More
