A beautiful abbey of turbulent history which nevertheless transmits serenity and spiritual feelings, with a portentous vitral opened to the South wall

This early 13th Cent. Dominican church is not black at all - it is rather beautiful, with great colorful stained glass works.
Its name comes from the black cloak Dominican friars used to wear . Don't miss .

Gorgeous 14th century dominican church. It has beautiful stained glass windows, a beautiful organ and several 800 year old pieces.

We happened in on a midday worship service and we stood quietly inside the side door… we felt welcomed by the smile and nod of a parishioner. It is absolutely lovely!!

Please don't let the name keep you from enjoying this oasis in the city. The abbey is a peaceful place to reflect, experience His presence, and admire the vibrant stain-glass windows. There are other interesting historic religious artifacts, however the abbey's endearing asset is its stain-glass windows.

Beautiful Abbey, the history is quit moving here! Stained glass is amazing. Well worth a visit while in Kilkenny. We were here 30 years ago and so glad we returned.

Great old church, stone walls and the stained glass windows are beautiful. Such a pleasure to see an understated church rather than the over the top European equivalents.

This is a lovely stop on your walk around Kilkenny. The exterior is beautiful as was the interior. There is a donation box just inside - use it!

I visited later in the day and was the only one there. Stunning stained glass and statutes, one dating back to the 1260s. Very awe-inspiring and poignant experience. Beautiful!

Hi, we are planning a visit to Ireland next summer and it says on Google Maps that The Black Abbey is permanently closed. It is also not on the Visit Kilkenny website. Can someone please help us out? Many thanks!

What hours is the Black Abbey open to the public?

I am not sure what the opening hours are but Catholic churches are usually open all day every day until around 7pm (depends on the individual church) and you are always welcome to attend mass. There is no charge to visit the Black Abbey but a small donation is always welcome. I hope this helps and I hope you enjoy the Abbey - the stained glass windows are magnificent.
