Sligo abbey is managed by the O.P.W. (office of public works, ie state owned). This is a self-guided tour. Very interesting, founded by the Dominicans in the mid 13th century. The ruins house the only sculptured 15th century 'high altar' to survive in any Irish monastic church!.. Look out for the flat tomb stone, which we noticed had been defaced... More

Say this Abbey about two blocks from our Hotel in Sligo. It was free with our OPW card but worth the E5 if not. The man at the visitor office as willing to answer all our questions and handed us a map with all the info we needed. I was amazed at how well preserved it was. A beautiful place... More

Really fascinating. Make sure you read the paper they give you carefully - it explains why the ceiling arches are so low.

We unfortunately showed up off tourist season, didn't get to go in, wandered around the outside and took a few photos that way

This was an interesting place to visit and not a very expensive entry fee either. The person selling the tickets when we visited was very friendly. We took a self guided tour which was quite informative and explained what we were seeing. There was a bit of stair climbing required but nothing too strenuous. The cloisters and carvings were particularly... More

Easy downtown location with lots of information attached. We enjoyed exploring the Abbey. One of the oldest buildings in Sligo

Really interesting visit to Sligo Abbey. You get a map and some information to wander round with. More extensive than it looks from the road. Lots to see, some stairs to climb, well preserved cloisters & some lovely stone carvings. Worth the 4E entrance fee.
