Description:

The magnificent curved facade of the warm butter-coloured stone building...

The magnificent curved facade of the warm butter-coloured stone building draws in the visitor. The eye-catching giant sculpture on the gable was inspired by a tiny 13th century belt mount found in Waterford. It is Ireland’s only purpose-built medieval museum and the only building on the island to incorporate two medieval chambers, the 13th century Choristers’ Hall and the 15th century Mayor’s Wine Vault.

Don't miss the stunning Heavens' Embroidered Cloths, Waterford's cloth-of-gold 15th century vestments, the only piece of clothing from King Henry VIII's reign to survive in the world - the 'Cap of Maintenance' and the Great Charter Roll from 1373, containing the earliest contemporary portrait of a medieval English king (Edward III) shown to Queen Elizabeth on her 2011 state visit to Ireland. These and many more unique artefacts await you on your guided tour of the award wining Medieval Museum.

I am not a huge fan of the medieval period but this was still a good tour. The guide was dressed in period attire and seemed very knowledgeable. The tour was enjoyable.

I visited this trio of museums a while ago and was extremely impressed by them. Each one is not too big, has many interesting artefacts and everything is well laid out. The fact that the Medieval Museum incorporates some of Waterford's ancient walls is an added bonus and music events held in the cellars are memorable.

Sadly enough, I got there as the Museum was closing and the staff were kind enough to let me in for a few brief minutes. My mind was blown at the sight of the Great Charter Roll; the roll itself was amazing to see, and the curation outstanding. I then dashed off to see the Heavens' Embroidered Cloth, and again... My wife and I went here for a tour, but got much more than expected. We met one of the extras for the show "Vikings ". A really nice man who loves his craft. We spent so much time talking to him, we couldnt see the museum, but fully intend to return.

Be sure to take in the AV theatre presentation. It is very informative. Interesting artifacts, especially the gold religious vestments and their amazing story. How fortunate they were found! Following the timeline of Norman kings very interesting - good soap opera material!

Visited the museum for the first time during recent visit to Waterford. Chose the guided tour which was very informative. It seems to be work in progress but the quality is amazing. Don't miss the 10 minute movie upstairs - very well put together. The star of the day was our guide Derek - he had us crying with laughter.... More

I'm no history junkie but I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this museum. It has many interesting artifacts and exhibits and details the long history of Waterford very well with the right amount of detail. My only gripes would be that the audio visual presentations didn't start until 12 and that would have made my visit complete hence 4 stars.

The Tour guide was so full of character and immersed in the history of his own city it was unbelievable. He covered everything from the Viking invasion to exit of the British empire. History just comes alive and fantastic artifacts that were uncovered were astoundingly well preserved at the time. Well worth a visit.

Its worth walking through to see the history of the town on display going back over 1,000 years. They even claim to have a piece of the true cross. Even if it's not, it's still impressive to see

Good afternoon Kevin Thank you for your review, we love to get such great feedback. The piece of the True Cross is one of our many exhibits and it is very impressive. This particular relic of the True Cross was a gift to Muircheartach Ó Briain from Pope Paschal II in the year 1110. Muircheartach could well have presented it... More
