Seeing Calke in its original state was an experience never to be forgotten. An insight into the past of wealth prosperity and how the other half lived . And then their downfall due to very unfair Death duty laws.

Very interesting how the NT saved this property but managed to keep it in the condition that it was found in. Good house, lovely gardens & the usual good refreshments & shop

The castle is a time capsule of what today would be called a family of hoarders. The building receives only structural repair with the interior left as the owners lived in it. If you are looking for a grand estate home and want to be...More

If you are looking to visit a pristine country house then Calke Abbey is not going to appeal. The Trust has spent a great deal of effort to safely protect the house in its decrepit condition. If quirky, interesting and unusual are your thing then...More

First time here, so didn't know what to expect. Lots and lots of parkland. Liked the plants in the walled garden. Asked about the walk at the back of the car park that was supposed to be EASY. It wasn't with some 30 steps. Much...More

An unexpected pleasure. Normally when you visit a stately home, mansion, hall or castle it is meticulously laid out with everything cataloged and it often seems that the collections are incomplete. Sometimes it even seems that rooms have be "reconstructed" and it is difficult to...More

It's a great place for a one-day day trip. Not only property is worth to visit. Gardens including an orangery and physic garden are fantastic place to relax and spend time among flowers and plants. If you need a one-day detox from concrete jungle, go...More

Spent a lovely day here. So much to do and see that we'll have to go back. Lovely walks (but don't be guided by the VERY inaccurate NT leaflet!! We were and took a much longer route than we should have!) House so different from...More

A great place to visit. This is not the usual NT property. Rooms have been left as they were found and not smartened up.

In sharp contrast to the NT's tendency to over-restore other stately homes, they decided to 'preserve' Calke Abbey more-or-less 'as is', making this (I believe) unique among their properties. The rich jumble of 'stuff' left by generations of the eccentric, collecting-mad owners is both fascinating...More

Hi Naomi, Thanks for your question. You're welcome to bring a picnic along to Calke Abbey; we have several large picnic benches at the top of the car park and overlooking the Deer Park for you to make use of. You can also... More

I would be coming by taxi from derby centre, would a taxi be allowed to drop us off at the main hub area and collect us again from there later without being charged to enter?

Hi there, thanks for your message. We have a per-person park admission fee that all visitors will need to pay on arrival (National Trust members are free!) - but don't worry, your taxi driver won't need to pay park... More
