About
Brockholes is a new kind of nature reserve, an unreserved reserve. Everyone is welcome at Brockholes, whether you're a naturalist or a beginner, we have something for you to enjoy and lots of chances for you to get close to nature! On the site of an old quarry, the Lancashire Wildlife Trust have used their expertise to create habitats for lots of different wildlife. You can take a stroll by the River Ribble, explore our woods or enjoy the lakes on site, which have all been specially designed to attract all kinds of wildlife for you to see! Our spectacular floating Visitor Village means that you are as close to nature as possible providing stunning views across the lake. You can also discover our interactive Welcome Centre and learn all about the wildlife that you could see on-site, discover the exciting play area and explore our network of walks and trails (including shorter ones for little legs). Please note that our Visitor Village is closed on a Monday & Tuesday from Nov to March.

Disappointing trip
Jun 2021 • Couples
virtually no signposts to distinguish routes
Everywhere overgrown with long grass and nettles so felt like not being maintained. Couldn’t find bench to sit on as all overgrown or covered in bird poo!
Very long grass in front of hide so had to stand because couldn’t see if sat down however only geece and swans to see so not exactly a nature reserve!
wooden animal carvings needed painting and cleaning up with signs as to why they are there.
Girl serving ice cream was not wearing mask and didn’t sanitise or wash hands between customers

Very disappointed overall but the place could be made much better with hard work and a little thought. Recent staff shortage is not an excuse as clearly been being neglected for many years judging by state of some paths

May 2021 • Couples
Great walks around the Lakes , very disappointed with the food .
Had to wait over half an hour , one poor girl doing everything, drinks , food and tills .
Sandwiches were dry and 1 round of bread with processed cheese for 2.95 !

Thanks for taking the time to provide a review. Your feedback has been passed to our Catering Manager. We have been exceptionally busy over the half term week, with the school holidays combined with the glorious weather. We are sorry you had to wait and thank you for your patience.

Disappointing food
Jun 2021 • Couples
A beautiful setting with great potential but we were disappointed with both the pricing at the cafe and the quality of the food.
2 cans of drink came to £4 which is extremely high. We also purchased sandwiches which were better priced but poor quality. The bread was fresh but cut very thick with a small amount of filling which meant it was mouthfuls of dry bread.
Would visit again for the views and ambience but would not purchase food

Hi Sarah, Thanks for taking the time to provide your feedback. It has been shared with our Catering Manager. Our prices are comparable with other visitor attractions. Since coming out of the latest lockdown, we have been working on Peckish, our additional catering outlet and trying some new menu items. Do give Peckish a try next time you visit!

Worth going for the ice cream!
May 2021 • Friends
I've read other recent reviews before posting mine because I was going to comment on the poor signage and wanted to see what others were saying. The replies to reviews say that not everything is up and running during lockdown and that paths are being improved so maybe don't be put off if you were also wondering where you should be walking! 5/5 for the ice cream though- it was delicious!

Thanks for the review - we are pleased you enjoyed your ice cream! We are hoping to have our Welcome Centre back open very soon, but in the meantime we have maps available from our catering outlets. We are working on improvements to signage on some of our trails at present, so do come back and visit us again soon!

Been there, won’t do it again.

I visited Brockholes today with my husband- we felt extremely underwhelmed and dare I say let down. There is a distinct lack of signage to identify which path takes which colour routes, I fully appreciate the transformation of the site and how it is an oasis to many forms of wildlife. As other have said, the car park fee is a little steep; I’ve seen much more wildlife on natural walks in our countryside and far better signage for trails and walks. In short unless you are a parent with a group of under 10’s to entertain on the play equipment opt for a true country walk- you will see more.

Hi Thanks for taking the time to post your review. You visited during the lockdown period when the reserve was open for local people to take their daily exercise. Many of our facilities were closed under government restrictions, meaning we couldn't provide you with a map or our Welcome Leaflet or any advice on walking routes. During this lockdown period, we have been taking the opportunity to do a lot of work on our paths and signage and have even created a brand new section of path around Meadow Lake. I would encourage you to visit again, particularly once we are able to fully reopen all our facilities, and I am sure that you will have a fantastic day.

Hi Jason You mention that you visited us during the first Covid Lockdown period in March 2020. We were operating at a reduced level from early March 2020 due to the Covid pandemic, and then had to close the reserve and all facilities, in line with government restrictions, later on in the month. We are just now starting to slowly reopen facilities again, as permitted, under the government roadmap, so I would encourage you to visit us again. I am sure you will have a great day!

Enjoyed the reserve but not the cafe
Oct 2020
The nature reserve itself is great. However the cafe was disappointing. There are not enough staff and it took us about 30 minutes to get to the counter and when we did, there was almost no food. The food although edible is expensive and not worth it. Enjoy the nature reserve but bring your own food!

Thank you so much for your feedback and taking the time to write a review. We are pleased you enjoyed your visit to our reserve. It is only with feedback such as yours that we can continue to review and improve the service we offer here at Brockholes. It has been shared with our Catering Manager. We apologise for your wait. Due to Covid -19 restrictions, we have had to make a lot of changes recently to the way we serve our visitors in the Kestrel Kitchen, the type of food we offer, and the systems we have in place to keep visitors and our staff safe. We can only now allow one household/bubble into the servery area at a time and this can lead to a bit of a wait on busy days. We are working hard as a charity to raise the funds to open a second quick service catering outlet on site that will help us keep our customers and staff safe whilst doubling the service points on the Visitor Village. We have already started work on this and we would hope to have this complete early next year. Thank you for your patience and also for visiting us at this challenging time. Your support is much appreciated. We hope to see you again very soon.

Good walk
Oct 2020 • Family
Decent nice walk around the reserve, just over 5 miles we did though I’m sure a greater walk could be done if you wish. Nice views as well.
Parking is £5 all day, be impressed if they spent a bit more making the car park more suitable, pot hole galore!

Food is poor at the cafe and very overpriced,

My advice is to park just outside, walk in, bring a picnic

I am pleased to read that you enjoyed your walk around our reserve and thank you for your feedback but perhaps you are not aware of the link between the parking charge and being able to operate Brockholes? Brockholes is owned and managed by Lancashire Wildlife Trust, a small, local conservation charity. We recieve no government or council funding to run Brockholes. We have to raise every penny to be able to operate ourselves, and without charging you an admission fee to get in, a parking charge helps us to generate some much needed income. I am afraid that managing a site like Brockholes does not come cheap. Our vital conservation work is specialist and labour intensive and our general running costs are high. Like many similar leisure and hospitality venues, we have been hit exceptionally hard over the past few months. We've had to close due to the pandemic from March into July and we are now subject to enhanced restrictions in Lancashire. We have seen a sharp drop in income from all our sources including parking, catering, weddings, conferencing, events and retail. Many staff remain on furlough or are working reduced hours whilst we try and find a way through. Yes, we'd love to be able to surface some of our parking bays, but this comes at a huge cost, one we simply can't afford at present. Your advice to others to park outside Brockholes and walk in puts others at risk and is simply not helpful. As you will have seen when you visited, inappropriate parking on blind bends, despite yellow lines is simply dangerous, not to mention blocking emergency vehicle access to our site. We are in contact with Highways Authorities to look at what additional steps can be taken to prevent this. In order to be able to continue to keep Brockholes operating, to provide our facilities for visitors to use and to continue with our conservation work we need to generate the funds to pay for it. Visiting places like Brockholes and spending time in nature has never been more important to people. We need wild places like Brockholes more than ever, and also need your support.

Go for the walk and not the cafe!
Oct 2019 • Couples
It’s such a shame that a place like this, with the amount of visitors it must get, has such bad catering facilities.

It’s not cheap either! We ordered a couple of coffees and they were straight from a machine and sent back. The second two weren’t any better and so I asked for a refund.

What a shame, with the revenue you must turn over you should invest in proper coffee machines, baristas and someone to run the place better. Really disappointing.

Hi Jeanette Thanks for taking the time to provide your feedback. We note from your review that the date of your visit was October 2019, with your review posted September 2020. At lot has changed at Brockholes since then! We have a new Catering Manager in post, and new coffee machines too. We have switched to Matthew Algie Coffee. Their Glasgow roastery is the first in the world to acheive the Gold Carbon Neutral standard, and is certified Fair Trade, organic and Rain Forest Alliance approved. You'll certinanly notice a difference with the taste too, so why not come down and give it a try? We'd love to know what you think?
