Owned by the serving monarch, HM Queen Elizabeth II, through the Duchy of Lancaster, Lancaster Castle is a wealth of English history. Since being established by the Romans the castle has been a home to monarchs, a place of trial and execution, and a working prison right up until 2012. Still a crown court, the majority of the castle is now open to the public for the first time in over 1,000 years. Since its opening in 2013, the Castle is gradually developing its offer of tours and events, as well as offering a cafe and gift shop in the grounds.

I must admit ,I thought that it would be a boring tour, but I was taken aback, the tour guide , who was called Cameron, was a fantastic and knowledgeable young man, he kept us all enthralled during the tour, and the time flew by.Brilliant.

A must do for when we have visitors. Been many times and never tire of the history of the cable. The big bonus is the prison side of things is now open for viewing

I live about 2 mins walk from Lancaster Castle. I’m fortunate in that respect because it’s superb. The gatehouse must be the greatest in the country. It’s free to wander inside the walls, and if you want a tour of the deeper darker parts inside...More

There are steps, quite a few and some of them are quite worn in places so you need to take care. The approach to the castle is quite steep as well
