Probably not a destination for most foreign tourists but it is an area that shows the diversity of French countryside. Puy-de-Dome is an extinct volcano that dominates the landscape near Clermont-Ferrand. Excellent for hiking or a day's drive and it provides an excellent view of the surrounding area.

Probably the best possible way to see how it looks in the countryside over here. We loved the views and as the weather was sunny and mild we also decided to walk down. Brilliant way to get a close view of French forest and nature.

On arriving at the visitors centre at the base of Puy-de-Dome, we got the train up to the top. It was very cloudy at the base of the mountain but at the top we had blue sky and looked down on the cloud layer. We had lunch outside on the terrace and then went to explore the Roman Temple of... More

Great views of the other volcanoes and Auvergne. There is a cafe at the top which isn't too expensive. There is also a roman temple, the temple of Mercury which was a surprise as we didn't know it was there. Well orth a visit.

Didn't believe the fact that France had volcanoes until I reached here. The entire region is surrounded by volcanic domes with some having craters.Beautiful views and a great experience is offered by the panoramique view offered by the train that takes you up a 15 min ride to Puy de dome.Up and down ticket costs around 12.30, but you can park... About half hour from city by car. Very nice place. Was quite cold in December but found it to be a "Must see". There is a train service to the top, which offers a great view

When I first moved to Clermont Ferrand this was one of the first sited I visited. The bottom is reachable by car only, I think, and after there is option to hike or to take small train. I have to admit I wanteded to hike second time but I was fully pregnant and it was a bit too intense; plus... More

It is one of the most beautiful views of France! You go to the top of the mountain by a confortable train and there, besides the fantastic view and tracks, you have restaurants, souvenir boutique and cafes.

This was supposed to be the highlight of our trip to France but on the day in question the cloud cover was 100% and visibility at the top was down to about 30m. We walked up from the car-park at the col and had a coffee in the restaurant, peered through the mist at the Temple of Apollo and then... More
