Not just another Cathedral

This is one to make time for. It merits setting aside two or three hours, sadly not too much information available other than in French.

A must visit when in Bourges. Very close also to walk to the centre afterwards. Nice architecture and a sight to admire especially from outside. See the clock tower model and explanation inside. Nice surrounding area.

The Cathedral stands out in the small town of Bourges, it is a gigantic building that you see from meters away. When standing in front of it, you realize how small you are compared to it. Anecdote: it was impossible for me to take decent and full pictures of the Cathedral from head to toe. It is an admirable construction... More

Amazing glass windows dating back to the middle ages. Totally worth the visit, even though it was dark and gloomy when we went. I suppose it is a wonderful sight on a sunny day.

The Cathedrale St Etienne is immensely beautiful and a highlight of a visit to France. It should be made better known. Its stained glass windows are exceptional. The Cathedral is also unique in that it was not damaged during the political upheavals and wars of the past centuries. Worth making a special journey to visit it.

Heaven and hell - on the whole, we thought hell looked more fun. Lovely walk up through old town to reach the cathedral, and we certainly enjoyed the gardens next to it - the colour plantings were unusual to British eyes - but they worked, with that unique French flair. We LOVED that garden, and sat by it enjoying a... More

The cathedral is quite a sight, with many picturesque cobbled streets leading up to the facade it feels typically french. I would highly recommend climbing the 400 steps up the tower, even if that number does seem a bit daunting, it is well worth the effort. The views over the old town are quite impressive and you really get a... More

I was shocked to find a cathedral of this scale in a small town like Bourges. Incredible architecture, flying buttresses, stained glass, and carvings/statues inside and outside. The story about the carvings on the center arch alone are amazing. It is worth getting a guide to explain this place and help you to "read the stained glass". There are local... More

Beautiful Cathedral with some of the oldest stained glass windows in Europe. In lovely surroundings.

We stopped a couple on nights near Bourges, and visited the city for the afternoon. Pleasant enough. The Cathedral is massive though. Occupying an obvious spot in the centre of town, and visible from miles around - we saw it the next day when we are driving quite away from the city. Cathedral is well worth a visit, really quite...
