It was meant to be a short day trip but we decided to extend by staying overnight. Chartres is a quaint town with lots to do. Many sights that would keep you occupied at least for a day or so especially not to be missed is the light show from April to October which runs into the early hours of... More

One of the most beautiful cathedrals in France. Very moving and must see. Beautiful inside. Stunning!

We took a guided tour or the cathedral and it was simply Devine. The guide really brought out the best of it and gave the audience a key in which any church can be read. This combined with the fact that it's the only place where the heads of the statues have not been ruined. That it is the only... More

The first time we came here the interior was dark and grimy but they have spent a fortune on cleaning it up and restoring it (a process that is ongoing) and the difference is amazing. It really is one of the biggest Cathedrals I have ever seen and the cleaned-up artwork and stained glass is very impressive. From Easter to... More

We went on Good Friday, the place still felt peaceful even though it was busy. Beautiful architecture and stunning windows. Highly recommend.

Must be larger than St Paul's In London. Beautiful stained glass and well preserved.Naturally like most old churches, many parts do need repair. Was not hassled for money at the door and although there was a church service at the time, the small group had relegated themselves to a side corder of the church. It's a bit sad to see... More

Not too long a journey from Gare Montparnasse. I arrived at Chartres Station and it was …under renovation! Chartres is not a large city and so it wasn’t more than a few minutes before I was in the core area. The Cathedral spires were in evidence and a large ‘CHARTRES’ sign dominated a civic square. Well, I was in the... More

This was a long planned vacation. Long before the range of calendar dates suitable for indicating the time of my visit or when my visit took place this vacation happened or took place many years ago. I planned all parts of it. As a much younger man who was determined to visit certain places away from Paris I traveled to... More

Nice cathedral, seen much better. Don't come to Chartres just for this cathedral. The unsymmetrical front was very disappointing.

This is a very doable day-trip from Paris. Check out the cathedral and crypts. Then, walk around town a bit. You will swear you are walking into a WWII photograph as you stroll up and down the cobblestone streets here. It is a welcomed escape from Paris.
