My mum suggested I visit the Château de Fontainebleau last night after reading a Wall Street Journal article about it, and I basically said, "Sure, I'll head there in the morning." And that's how easy it was. I left my hotel in the morning, went to Gare de Lyon, took the train for Laroche-Migennes, and got off at Fontainebleau-Avon (3... More

At one-hour drive from Paris, the well maintained castle offers a fascinating combination of architecture and history in a well organised tour. Once you finish with the inside, worth spending some time around the castle, admiring the nature. This is a must go.

What an amazing place to visit! Room after magnificent room to view, then all the grounds and gardens. Luckily everyone visited in December so gardens were fairly plain so we concentrated on the house. Napoleon is heavily featured here so it's worth reading up on your French history before you go. The artefacts and costumes were great. The ceilings alone... More

It's beautiful, the rooms are vast and hold loads of history. Moreover, it's much less crowded than Versailles and you can really enjoy your visit without feeling stifled. Worth a day trip from Paris.

This is a must if you are in Fontainebleau - well laid out and fascinating. Take advantage of the user friendly audio guide. Learnt so much about Napoleon. Beautiful gardens to walk round after

We decided to take the train to this location on a rainy day from Gare de Lyon. We found it a bit confusing buying the ticket and finding the correct train since it was our first time using this mode of transit. However, with assistance from helpful passengers we found our train (Transilien to Fontainebleau/Avon). The trip itself was enjoyable... More

This is in the top three sites of my France trip, but this is my favorite chateau. Unlike Versailles, this one is fully decorated with paintings, lights, and full furniture. You really feel like you're getting the full experience. I enjoyed my visit becuase the audio guide taught me so much about the history, people, and the items on display.... More

This was my second visit to Fontainebleau. This chateau just takes your breath away, the amount of gold gilding used in every room is astonishing. The furnishings are just sumptuous, like really over the top. You can see no expense was spared for royalty. This chateau is so full of history it's staggering. Next time; I am taking the train... This palace is one of the oldest in Europe & was home to 800 years of monarchs. If its walls could speak, imagine the scandals & stories they could whisper into your ears. learn about Napoleon & his legacy at this palace ! Rent a period costume & dress up in a long period dress , replete with a floral... More
