I always return to this neighborhood on each visit to Paris. It has a unique character. The bridges over the canal, the views along it are all superb. Good place for picnic. A few restaurants and cafes. I highly recommend the very slow barge tour that passes through the locks and eventually travels underground! Leisurely way to see the area.

For a leisurely walk with lots of people-watching and other interesting sites, strolling along the banks of the Canal Saint-Martin on a sunny day can't be best. Stating just a bit east of the Place de Republique, where it emerges from underground, the canal goes through some rough and funky neighbourhoods, where graffiti is more predominant than street signage. With... More

Maybe we weren't at the right place along the canal. We decided to go to the canal because I had read some good reviews as a nice place to go see. But the water was filthy and stagnent, Bird poop everywhere. And rubbish and broken glass everywhere. Smelt like urine. Wouldn't recommend it and we won't be going back

I have wanted to go here the past couple of times we have come to Paris and we finally made it on this trip. Based on all of the reviews I have read, it sounded like this would be such a great place to go and hang out for awhile. It is probably the dirtiest place in Paris we have... More

We took the tour boat that leaves from the Seine River near the d'Orsay Museum. The most wonderful part of the tour was going down the Seine by I'le de Cite and I'le Saint Louis past Notre Dame, the Louvre, and under the bridges that cross the Seine. I had trouble understanding the narration from the crew. Entering the Saint... More

After so many visits to Paris it was nice to find something different to visit. The walk along Canal St Martin is a very nice stroll. Take your time and enjoy it!

Canal Saint Martin is a favorite of Parisan families on Sunday (in good weather). Otherwise, a gathering spot for young people from everywhere. Historically, the canal was vital to Paris and clean water and is an engineering marvel. The locks are interesting and worthwhile. Photographically dynamic and lovely.

Paris has so many great attractions that this is one for those that love canals or who have time to really explore -- it is more a voyage (on foot, the boats no longer run) through history with lots of side trips. We spent five hours wandering and really enjoyed our time, but we were in Paris for a week... More
