This is not an iconic French cathedral; yet none the less impressive for that. A statue of the Virgin Mary surrounded by an iron grille had stood on the site, in the heart of Lille, since the 13th century. In the religous fervour of the mid-nineteenth it was decided to build an enormous church in the mode of the Gothic... More

If you are visiting Lille, then don't miss this Cathedral - it has a very unusual combination of old and contemporary style.

You can find this cathedral in the centre of town and it's worth a visit: a nice refuge from the hustle and bustle in the centre.

What a lovely cathedral. An odd (but in my opinion it works) marriage of old and modern architecture. Even if it doesn't float your boat it will certainly get you thinking. The Place Gilleson has cafes with terraces which add to the charm of the whole place. Definitely worth a visit

What you will remember more about this place is surely its contrasts. Incredibly ugly the facade, it will make you wonder if you really want to get in. But then, when inside, you will be shocked and astonished for how incredibly beatiful it is. The internal little chapels where absolutely my favourite. I cannot understand why to ruin such a... We didn’t know what to make of this cathedral offering a weird hodgepodge of 19th and 20th century interpretations of the gothic style. At first we even thought the ugly façade, combining a metal grid and thin marble plates, was still under construction. In fact it was finished in 1999.The design, by local architect Pierre-Louis Carlier, works much better seen... More

From the outside it is a mish mash of modern and late 19th century but go inside - wow! Light, airy and beautiful. Not to be missed.

I felt really good in this place. Everything was very calm and slow and organ music was brilliant! Also they had a nice exhibition of paintings dedicated to Jesus.

We went in as part of the guided tour and it is a beautiful place. I am not religious at all but found this place relaxing and serene. The architecture is grand but modern in places - a beautiful building!

I did not know what to think when I saw the exterior. It is fair to say it is better on the inside than the outside. Worth a visit.
